GREEN BAY, Wisc. - UIC women's basketball (2-21, 1-17 Horizon) fell 75-46 to the Green Bay Phoenix (16-5, 12-3 Horizon) on Thursday evening. Despite a strong push in the second quarter of play, the Flames were unable to capitalize against the Phoenix. The Flames will be back on Saturday, Feb. 19, at 2:00 p.m.
The Flames started the game struggling against the fast pace of the Phoenix in the first quarter. UIC was able to keep it close on the rebounding numbers, grabbing seven and holding Green Bay to nine, but the Phoenix defense played strong. The Flames were led by
Kristian Young, who was fighting on the inside, scoring six points in the opening quarter.
UIC's offense started to perform in the first five minutes of the second quarter of play. The Flames consistently found themselves open in the corner, playing impressive inside-out basketball.
Keona Schenck and
Jaida McCloud were lethal from 3-point land, while
Leah Yarbrough put up some tough buckets on the interior. Young continued to be the catalyst for the offensive momentum that the Flames found themselves with. After the media timeout, the Phoenix adjusted, and the Flames lost their momentum, going into the half with a 39-25 lead.
The Flames were unable to recover the momentum after halftime. UIC ultimately fell, 75-46 to the Green Bay Phoenix at the Kress Center. The Flames will hop on the road for the final regular-season road game against Milwaukee, Saturday, Feb. 19, at 2:00 p.m.
