UIC's swimmers and divers are gearing up for postseason competition as the Flames travel to Indianapolis to compete in the Horizon League Championships starting Wednesday.
The Flames women finished second, the program's best-ever result, at last year's conference meet. The men were third. Both groups will look to solidify or improve on those standings, behind several individuals with championship or school record performances in their sights.
Poleena Kovalaske, Kalie Landrum, Victoria Thor, Ashton Amerman, Lizzie Zeller, Taira Juronis, and Lilly Culp are among the swimmers who the women will look to for points throughout the meet. Each has a top-10 time in the conference during the regular season. Culp is the two-time defending champion in the 200 fly, and holds the UIC record in the 100 fly. Kovalaske is also a record holder, in the 50 free, and will swim freestyle and breaststroke events at conference.
Zeller is one of six senior swimmers gearing up for their final Horizon League meet. She could make the finals of both backstroke events. Thor and Amerman give the Flames depth in the distance freestyle events. Landrum made a splash her freshman season and is among the league's top swimmers in mid-distance events.
On the diving boards, Cydney Liebenberg enters her final conference meet as a five-time Horizon League champion. She has been named Diver of the Meet at each of her three previous conference appearances. Ciara McCliment has steadily improved her scores throughout her freshman season and should contend in the final rounds.
Felix Lafortune leads the men's divers. He has three individual crowns and two Diver of the Meet honors on his resume.Â
Cole Tremewan has shown that he is capable of competing for a podium finish on both boards.
Jeff Wiedoff,
Jan Komorowski,
Liam Davis, and
Ben Ramminger have all turned in top-10 times within the conference in multiple events. Wiedoff will challenge in the sprint freestyle events, while Komorowski is considered a favorite in the distance free races. Davis continues UIC's tradition of individuals who can final in distance free and butterfly events. Ramminger leads the way for the Flames in the breaststroke races.
Senior
Kyle Lewarchick holds UIC's program record in the 400 IM. Classmate Josh Dellorto has made individual event finals in each of the last two conference meets.
Action at the IUPUI Natatorium will begin Wednesday afternoon with diving preliminaries in the women's 3-meter. Finals will proceed in the evening, and then the meet will ramp up Thursday with three individual swimming events and the men's 1-meter diving finals. The schedule gets even more packed Friday and Saturday with morning prelims, evening finals, and relays all being contested. All final rounds will be streamed on ESPN+.
