CHICAGO - UIC women's basketball (2-24, 1-20 Horizon) fell in the final game of the regular season to the Youngstown State Penguins (24-5, 18-4), 61-54. The Flames battled hard with the game coming down to the final seconds of play but ultimately fell to Youngstown State. The Flames were led in scoring by
Jaida McCloud, who finished with 21 points.
Kristian Young ended the game with 11 points, six rebounds, five steals, and two assists. The Flames will look forward to the Horizon League Championship on March 1.
At the start of the game, UIC shut down the Youngstown State Penguins. The Flames held the Penguins to 33% shooting from the field and held YSU to only 11 points in the quarter.
Keona Schenck's two triples from the corner to start the game off set the precedent for the Flames' offense.
Lindsey Rogers made a 3-pointer of her own to put the Flames up going into the second quarter, 13-11.
The Flames kept a similar defensive mentality heading into the second quarter of play but were unable to match their offensive output of the first quarter. UIC found themselves shooting 27.3% from the field in the second quarter, only scoring seven points despite several good looks. Young continued to poke the ball free from the Penguins guards, tallying four steals by the halftime buzzer. Youngstown State reclaimed the lead at the half, 26-20.
UIC and Youngstown State continued to battle back and forth in the second half of play, with the fourth quarter being an offensive show. The Flames scored 21 points, eight of which came from the foul line, but Youngstown State was able to maintain a lead and capitalize off UIC's missed free throws. The Flames went 11-24 at the line, shooting 45.8%, spelling disaster for UIC. Flames women's basketball continued to play hard but fell in the end to Youngstown State.
The Flames look forward to the first round of the Horizon League Championship starting on March 1.
