CHICAGO - The UIC women's basketball team (2-17, 1-12 Horizon) fell to the Oakland Golden Grizzlies (11-10, 9-5 Horizon), 59-47. The Flames put up a valiant effort against the Golden Grizzlies, but ultimately. The Flames were led in scoring by
Jaida McCloud, who finished with 27 points, her second-largest offensive output of the season.
Leah Yarbrough also showed out, recording a new career-high in points with 11.Â
The Flames started the game strong, keeping the game close through the first quarter of play against the Golden Grizzlies. In the second quarter, the Flames fizzled offensively and turned the ball over 11 times. UIC was able to keep the offensive output of Oakland down in the second quarter, however, allowing only 14 points.Â
In the second half of play, the Flames found their rhythm. UIC scored 18 points against Oakland, but Oakland put up an efficient 19 points on 58% from the field in the third. The Flames were able to take advantage of Oakland's mistakes, forcing the Golden Grizzlies into six turnovers.Â
The Flames continued to battle back to the final buzzer behind some impressive play from McCloud, who put up 21 points in the second half of play. The sophomore shined in the third quarter, scoring all but two of the Flames points in the third quarter.Â
UIC kept the game close but was unable to overcome the deficit, falling 59-47. UIC will return to play next week Thursday, Feb 10, at Northern Kentucky.Â
