Seven Flames earned Horizon League Swimming and Diving All-Academic Team honors, in voting released by the league today.
Felix Lafortune,
Kyle Lewarchick,
Lilly Culp,
Beth Kelzer,
Cydney Liebenberg,
Anna Scovill, and
Victoria Thor all made the All-Academic Team.
Culp, Kelzer, Scovill, and Lafortune are repeat selections from last year. New this season, Honorable Mention teams were added to the honors.
Liam Davis, Jeff Wiedoff, and
Lizzie Zeller earned honorable mention status. The Flames' total of ten student-athletes is the highest in the conference.
Lafortune holds a 4.0 GPA in his graduate marketing coursework. He is the Horizon League champion in 3-meter diving and was second in 1-meter diving, and was named Diver of the Meet. A four-time Horizon League champion and eight-time NCAA Zone diving qualifier, Lafortune won both diving events three times during the dual meet season and had 8 total wins.
Lewarchick is a finance major with a 3.96 GPA. He made the B-final in the 200 fly at the Horizon League Championships, and had three top-3 swims in UIC's early-season dual meet against Northwestern. He won two individual events during the dual meet season as part of his 13 top-three regular season swims.
Culp has a 3.95 GPA as a computer science major. Culp was the 200 fly champion at the 2022 Horizon League Championships. It was her third straight title in the event. She was also third in the 100 fly and fifth in the 200 IM at conference this year. Culp holds the UIC program record in the 100 fly.
Kelzer, a neuroscience major, has a perfect 4.0 GPA. She set season-bests in the 100 free and 200 free at conference. She had a pair of top-three finishes in dual meet against Valpo, and was in the top five in two events in UIC's dual meet against Oakland.
Liebenberg has a 3.55 GPA as a rehabilitation science major. She is the Horizon League champion in 1-meter and 3-meter diving; and was named Diver of the Meet at the Horizon League Championships. She amassed a record seven individual Horizon League diving championships over her career. A 10-time NCAA Zone meet qualifier, who advanced to the finals of Zones last year and this year, Liebenberg holds the UIC records in 1-meter and 3-meter diving.
Scovill also has a perfect 4.0 GPA, and is majoring in electrical engineering. She qualified for the consolation finals in the 100 back at the Horizon League Championships. Scovill won the 100 fly in the Flames' dual meet against Valpo, and totaled eight top-five finishes in individual events during thedual meet season.
Thor has earned a 3.95 GPA, majoring in political science. She made the finals in the 200 free and 500 free at the Horizon League Championships. She had six top-four finishes during the dual meet season, and was 5th in the 200 free and 3rd in the 500 free at the competitive House of Champions invitational at IUPUI.
Davis, who has a 3.85 GPA as a mechanical engineering major, made the A-final in the 200 fly at the Horizon League Championships. He was a double winner in UIC's dual meet against Milwaukee (100 fly and 200 fly), and had two second-place swims in the meet against Northwestern. Davis had 14 top-four swims during the dual meet season.
Wiedoff, also a mechanical engineering major, has a 3.83 GPA. A member of last season's All-Academic Team, he made one A-final and two B-finals at the Horizon League Championships. He won the 50 free in the dual meet against Milwaukee, and had a total of 9 top-three finishes during the dual meet season.
Zeller has a 3.66 GPA as a bioengineering major. She was 5th in the 100 back and 4th in the 200 back at the Horizon League Championships, and was a member of the 2nd-place 400 free relay and 400 medley relay, and 3rd-place 200 free relay teams, at conference. Zeller won the 200 back and was 2nd in the 200 free in dual meet against Valpo. She finished 2nd in the 200 back in dual meet against Notre Dame.
Voting on the All-Academic Team was done by the Faculty Athletic Representatives at each conference institution. Candidates had to have a minimum 3.2 cumulative GPA, have appeared in at least 50% of their team's competitions, and have completed one year with 24 semester credit hours at their current institution. The top 15 vote-getters made the All-Academic Team, and ties were not broken. Honorable mention status went to those who received at least 25% of the vote, but did not make the first team.
