Cydney Liebenberg qualified for the women's 1-meter finals, where she finished just short of a berth in the NCAA National Championships, in zone competition Monday.
Liebenberg scored 265.55 in the prelims, placing 14
th out of 57 divers and earning a place in the 18-member final round. Her total of 284.95 in the final, when added to her preliminary score, moved her up to 11
th place after all was said and done. The top nine divers qualified for nationals. Liebenberg was less than six points out of ninth place.
In the men's 3-meter competition, Felix Lafortune scored 306.35 to finish 24
th. Cole Tremewan was right behind him in 25
th with a total of 302.05.
Lafortune finished the round strong, scoring 57.00 and 57.80 on his last two dives to mark his two highest scores of the six-dive event. In all, three of his dives scored over 50 and a fourth came in at 49.50. Tremewan scored high on early dives, putting him in contention after three rounds. He followed two 58-point dives with a 33.60 effort, pushing him down the standings. He rallied to score over 50 on his last two dives to close out his first career Zone appearance.
Ciara McCliment also competed in the women's 1-meter event. She started strong with a score of 41.25 on her first dive. That would stand as her highest score of the round, as she finished with a total of 218.10 and a 52
nd-place ranking.
Zone competition will continue Tuesday. The men's 1-meter and women's 3-meter events will begin simultaneously at noon.
