Flames Knocked Off by Norse

UIC held scoreless for seventh time this spring

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – UIC played its first game at Northern Kentucky since the 2018 season on Friday, but the Flames were unable to knock off the home team as they fell by a final score of 2-0.

The Flames (4-19, 1-7 Horizon League) out-hit the Norse (12-16, 3-4 Horizon League), 6-4, but the visitors  left seven runners on base Friday, including five in scoring position as NKU snapped a six-game losing streak against UIC.

Maica Ingles picked up a career-high three hits for the Flames, while Christina Toniolo threw a complete game and squandered only two runs on four hits with five strikeouts and just one walk.
UIC's first scoring threat came in the top of the third inning. Isabelle Garcia, who was making her first start of the season at second base Friday, drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Ingles, who had singled in her first at-bat sacrificed Garcia to third, but she would be stranded there when Tara McElligott's long fly ball was caught in left field to end the inning.

The Norse broke through in their half of the third, scoring a pair of runs on a two-out RBI single from Kendyl McKeough. UIC tried to answer in its half of the fourth thanks on the strength of back-to-back singles from Alannah Cran and Dee Dee Caskey, but the pair was left in scoring position.

A pair of freshmen looked to ignite the offense in the top of the sixth. Grace Fleming fired off a single to shallow to center field to open the inning before Hailey Cowing reached on an error by NKU's first baseman. Cran, a junior, pushed the pair up one base each with a sacrifice bunt. NKU's Madisyn Eads came up with a big strikeout for the second out before a pop out to second base squashed the threat.

The Flames made it interesting in the seventh. Larisa Villa reached on an error and moved from second to third when Ingles slapped her third hit of the day to right field. Eads got a pair of fly balls to end the contest, however.

Notes:
  • UIC's six-game winning streak against the Norse was snapped Friday. It marked only the third win in the all-time series for NKU, and its first at home.
  • Jojo Santiago is one of three Flames to start all 23 games this season, but Friday marked her first at somewhere other than second base. The freshman earned the nod behind the plate to open this series.
  • Maica Ingles recorded a career-high three hits. She had previously posted two hits on nine occasions.
  • Christina Toniolo, making her team-leading ninth start of the season in the circle, struck out at least six batters for the third time in 17 appearances, and the second time against an Horizon League foe (vs. PFW on 3/10)
  • The Flames held the opposition to two runs or less for the sixth time. UIC is 3-3 in those contests.
Up Next:
  • The Flames and Norse will conclude the series on Saturday with a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is slated for 12 p.m. CT
