Flames Ready to Renew Acquaintances with Butler

UIC travels to Indianapolis for non-conference game Tuesday

4/11/2022 12:24:00 PM

CHICAGO -- Former conference foes and frequent opponents on the field, UIC will renew its rivalry with Butler on Tuesday with a trip to Indianapolis to play the Bulldogs in a non-conference game. First pitch has been moved up one hour from the previously announced time and the game is now set to begin at 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT.

The Flames (7-22) enter Tuesday's game having lost two-of-three over the weekend to Green Bay. After dropping the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, UIC bounced back with a stellar outing in the circle from Carlee Jo Clark, solid infield defense, a solo home run from Tara McElligott and some timely hitting later on to edge the Phoenix 3-1. In the finale on Sunday, the teams were locked at 1-1 for most of the ballgame until Green Bay went ahead with a two-run rally in the top of the seventh. Larisa Villa and Clark singled to try and spark a surge for UIC, but the comeback could not be completed this time around.

McElligott continues to swing a big bat for the Flames this spring. The team's lone senior is batting .324 in 27 games, while slugging .689 and getting on base at a clip of .452. Her OPS, 1.141, ranks second in the Horizon League entering the week, and her seven home runs are third most in the conference.

Butler (21-14) won two-of-three on the road at St. John's over the weekend. The Bulldogs won the opener emphatically, 10-1, before claiming a closer victory on Saturday, 3-2. Butler fell in the series finale, 8-3.

The Bulldogs are batting .273 as a team on the season. Lauren Fey is batting a team-high .371 with 39 hits and 12 stolen bases in 17 attempts. Monique Hoosen is slugging .679 with nine home runs and 23 RBI for Butler. In the circle, the Bulldogs own a 3.98 team ERA and opponents are hitting .232 against them with 244 strikeouts in 35 games.

UIC and Butler have met 60 times since 1994. UIC has won 45 of those contests, including the last two matchups which occurred in 2019. The Flames are 16-8 in that span at Butler's Softball Field.

Tuesday's game, which again begins at 2 p.m. CT, will be streamed on FloSports/Butler+.
