DETROIT – In a low-scoring affair, the Detroit Mercy Titans used one productive inning at the plate and held off a seventh-inning rally to get past the UIC Flames in the first game of a three-game set Friday afternoon, 3-1.
The Flames (8-26, 5-12 Horizon League) were limited to only five hits in the opener and the lineup pushed only four runners into scoring position all day long. In the circle,
Alyssa McIntosh held the Titans (4-30, 4-15 Horizon League) to a lone earned run on five hits over 5.0 innings pitched.
Trailing by three in the top of the seventh, UIC mounted a late comeback.
Dee Dee Caskey drew a walk with one out in the frame and she would score the first run of the day for the Flames shortly thereafter when
Jojo Santiago laced the first pitch of her at-bat down the left-field line to score Caskey with ease from second base. The game, however, ended on a fly out by UIC's next hitter.
Earlier, UIC's first runner in scoring position came in the top of the fourth inning. Designated player
Carlee Jo Clark clubbed a double with one out, but she would be stranded there when
Grace Fleming flew out near the warning track in center field for the final out of the inning.
The Titans had been held hitless their first time through the lineup against
Alyssa McIntosh before making their own noise in the bottom of the fourth. Detroit Mercy loaded the bases with one away on an error and back-to-back singles before a two-run double off the bat of
Jordyn Chapman gave the home team the first lead of the day.
The third time facing Detroit Mercy starting pitcher
Liz Murphy looked to be more fruitful for the Flames.
Maica Ingles singled to right-center field one-out walk before
Tara McElligott walked on five pitches. Murphy settled, however, and needed only three more pitches to record the final two outs of the frame and keep UIC off the scoreboard once again.
Detroit Mercy added an insurance run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth.
Liz Paver worked a full count delivered and blooped an RBI single to right field that a diving Caskey could not corral despite an all-out effort.
