DETROIT – UIC won in two different ways Saturday as it swept both ends of a doubleheader at Detroit Mercy, winning by scores of 4-1 and 13-3.
In the opener,
Carlee Jo Clark held the Titans to one run on one hit in a complete-game effort and she drove in two runs at the plate. In the finale, the offense exploded for season highs in runs (13), hits (19) and home runs (4) in a dominant victory.
Game 1 Recap
UIC waited until the seventh inning to get on the scoreboard in the series opener Friday, but it wasted little time getting into the run column Saturday.
Maica Ingles led off the game with a base hit to right field and she moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, pitcher
Carlee Jo Clark laced an RBI single through the left side to give the Flames an early 1-0 lead.
The visitors would add to the lead in the top of the third. It was Clark once again, as her second RBI single in as many at-bats brought
Tara McElligott home to make it 2-0 in favor of UIC.
Clark cruised through the Titan lineup the first time around as she did not allow a base runner through the first three innings.
McKenna Tanguay notched the first hit and first run of the day for Detroit Mercy as her solo home run cut the Flames lead in half.
UIC padded the lead in the top of the seventh inning. With a pair in scoring position,
Dee Dee Caskey lofted a ball high in the air to left field that the Titans couldn't track. By the time it landed on the ground,
Larisa Villa and Ingles scored to increase the lead to three runs at 4-1.
Game 2 Recap
The Flames grabbed the first lead in the nightcap with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning.
Hailey Cowing singled and scored on a Titan throwing error before McElligott muscled a double down the line in left field to bring home Ingles and double the early advantage. UIC would add another run in the top of the third when
Grace Fleming ripped a sharp single back through the box to score Caskey and make it 3-0 in favor of the Flames.
The Titans cut into the deficit with a two-run home run from Tanguay in the bottom of the third before they were able to tie the game on an RBI double the next inning.
UIC jumped back in front in the top of the fifth and didn't look back. An RBI single from Cowing preceded a two-run home runs from
Isabelle Garcia to make it 6-3. The Flames would add three more runs in the top of the sixth on the strength of three consecutive home runs. Caskey was the first to go deep, followed by Fleming. Then
Jojo Santiago blasted the first homer of her young career to push the lead to six runs.
The line kept moving in the top of the seventh as UIC added four more tallies to really put the game out of reach. Garcia added an RBI double to her ledger before Clark cleared the bases with a three-run double.
Detroit Mercy would load the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but a line-drive double play to Ingles at third base and a ground out to the hot corner ended the ballgame.
Notes
- Detroit Mercy's one hit in the first game of the doubleheader was the fewest by a UIC opponent this spring. The previous low mark, three, came via San Jose State on Feb. 19.
- Seven of nine Flames in the lineup for game one had at least one hit in the victory as UIC recorded at least nine hits for the seventh time this season.
- The Flames did not commit a defensive error in the first game Saturday, snapping a skid of eight consecutive games with a misplay in the field.
- UIC's 13 runs and 19 hits in the nightcap both marked season highs, as did the four home runs.
- Four players racked up three hits in game two for UIC: Maica Ingles, Carlee Jo Clark, Dee Dee Caskey and Hailey Cowing. For Clark and Cowing, that marks a career high, while it matches a personal best for Ingles and Caskey.
- Ingles has reached base safely in a season-high 13 consecutive games for the Flames, and in 15 of the last 16 contests overall.
Up Next
- UIC will round out the road trip Tuesday afternoon, April 26, with a short trip to Evanston, Ill., where it will take on No. 7 Northwestern at 4 p.m.
- The Flames will also have a mid-week home game on Wednesday, April 27 against the NIU Huskies. First pitch of that contest is slated for 3 p.m.
