Clark Homers, But Flames Fall at No. 8 Northwestern

UIC limited to two runs on four hits against high-powered Wildcats

EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 8 Northwestern jumped in front of UIC early on Tuesday afternoon at Sharon J. Drysdale Field and did not look back en route to a decisive five-inning victory.

The Flames put together an early threat Tuesday. With one away in the ballgame, Tara McElligott and Carlee Jo Clark walked on five and four pitches, respectively. The Horizon League Player of the Week, Dee Dee Caskey sacrificed the pair up 60 feet each, but a fly out to right field ended the frame without a run.

Northwestern went to work in the bottom of the first and cranked out eight hits leading to 10 runs. The biggest swing of the inning came from Ayana Lindsey as her grand slam grew a six-run deficit for the Flames to double digits. The Wildcats added six more runs in the second inning with their second home run of the contest, a three-run shot from Lauren Caldrone.

UIC kept fighting and broke into the scoring column in the top of the third. Maica Ingles singled up the middle to begin the frame and two batters later, Clark crushed her first home run in a Flames uniform out to left-center field. The visitors would go on to load the bases with two outs in the top of the fourth, but a sharp line drive to second base off McElligott's bat was snared to end the threat. NU would go on to add five more runs in the bottom of the fourth to account for the final margin of victory.
