Resilient Flames Defeat IUPUI

Team Earns First Win in Conference Action

UIC rallied from a 2-0 deficit to pick up its first Horizon League win of the season with a stirring 5-2 victory over IUPUI Saturday afternoon.

"Our seniors led us today," Hans Neufeld said, noting that all of his seniors won on the singles courts.  "Francesco's win was the clincher.  Pelle was down 5-2 in the first set and rattled off ten of the next 12 games to win 7-5, 6-2.  We showed great resiliency today."

Resiliency was needed after IUPUI won the doubles point and the first set in three of the singles matches.  The Jaguars defeated the Flames 7-0 in the teams' first meeting and were on their way to another win, until Strandberg completed his comeback, Ammar Wazir won his team-high 11th singles match of the season, and Kevin Kruzel won in three sets.  The momentum continued as seniors Francesco Tacconi and Anthony Nguyen posted wins to close out the match.

Doubles Results
  • Kruzel and Theo Duclos lost a 6-3 set at #3.
  • Luiz Dos Santos and Tacconi also fell 6-3, at #1.
  • Strandberg and Artem Iermolov were on the short end of a 5-4 score at #2 when play was halted.
Singles Results
  • Gustavo Schwebel moved into the #1 flight for the first time in conference play.  He went down 6-2, 6-0.
  • Strandberg posted a 7-5, 6-2 win at #2.
  • Wazir rebounded from a first set loss to win 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 in his debut on the #6 court.
  • Kruzel duplicated his classmate's results, taking a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) win at #5.
  • Tacconi clinched the team win after his 6-3, 7-6 (1) victory at #3.
  • Nguyen picked up his first singles win in conference play, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 at #4.
