Flames Drop Sunday Slugfest

UIC falls, 14-13, to Oakland Sunday afternoon

ROCHESTER, Mich. – The UIC baseball team traveled to Rochester, Michigan on Sunday, May 15, for a scheduled doubleheader against Oakland. Due to lightning between games, and then a rain delay during Game 2, the two teams were only able to complete one game due to darkness.

In an offensive shootout, Oakland came from behind late to pick up a 14-13 win. The Flames were leading 3-1 in Game 2 of the doubleheader when the game was called and deemed a no contest after three innings.

UIC jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks to some two-out hitting in the opening inning. After Ryan Lin-Peistrup doubled to lead off the game, the next two batters were retired. Breck Nowik delivered a two-out RBI double to make it 1-0 and then, following a Ryan Nagelbach walk, Rayth Petersen made it 4-0 with a three-run blast to left.

Oakland countered with a run in the bottom of the first before the Flames added onto the lead in the second. Bryan Rosario had a run-scoring single to left center and came around to score on Nowik's single to right. The redshirt freshman would then score on a wild pitch, putting the Flames in front by a 7-1 margin.

The Golden Grizzlies came all the way back with six runs in the second inning to tie things up at 7-all before UIC's offense got rolling again in the fourth.

Nowik continued his hot start to the day with a solo blast to center to make it 8-7 before Nagelbach trotted home later in the fourth on a wild pitch to put the Flames in front, 9-7. UIC's lead didn't last long, as Oakland tied things up at 9 in the home half of the fourth.

UIC looked to put the game away with a Lin-Peistrup solo shot in the fifth and then three more runs in the sixth put the visitors up 13-9. The Flames' lead wouldn't last, as Oakland scored five consecutive runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 14-13 lead and UIC was unable to draw even in the seventh inning.

Nowik and Petersen each had four hits in the contest and tied the team-high with four RBI apiece. Three of Nowik's four hits went for extra bases, as the Flames had seven extra bases hits during Game 1.

UIC closes out the regular season next weekend with a three-game series at Youngstown State beginning Thursday afternoon.
