ROCHESTER, Mich. – The UIC track and field team was back in action Saturday afternoon for Day 2 of the 2022 Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Oakland University.
"Some things went our way today and unfortunately some things didn't go our way but that's track & field," said head coach
Ashley Lucas. "We got a handful into the finals tomorrow which is always exciting. We'll rest up and get ready for our last day tomorrow."
Saturday's racing for the Flames consisted solely of qualifying events, looking to compete in Sunday's finals. In total, five Flames punched their ticket Saturday afternoon to race for the podium Sunday.
The Flames got a pair of qualifiers in the men's 400, with
Jesse Casas finishing second overall with a time of 47.71. He will be joined in the finals with
Trevor Tousana, who clocked the sixth fastest time in the event (49.55).
In the women's 400m event, Bailey Moran matched Casas with a second-place effort to advance to the finals with a time of 57.35.
Sacrad Michelin finished fourth in the men's 200m qualifying to advance to the finals after crossing the line in 21.89. Casas and Tousana just missed out on the finals, finishing in ninth and 10
th place, respectively. Casas' time of 21.95 was .06 off of the final qualifying spot while Tousana clocked in at 22.02.
Will Stout claimed the final spot in the finals with his seventh-place effort in the men's 400 hurdles, finishing in 59.46.
UIC nearly sent three more Flames to the finals in the men's 100m and women's 200m events.
Max Rivera (10.77) and
Dalton Burk (10.82) were the first two finishers outside of qualifying, with Rivera's time falling .04 shy of the eighth and final spot. Olivia Dumas, competing in the women's 200m, also finished ninth in her event with a time of 24.74.
The five qualifiers will join Teresa Mejia in Sunday's finals, with Mejia qualifying Friday night for the finals of the women's 1500.
