Baseball Opens Season With Pair of Wins Over Saint Mary's

Flames Smash Three Home Runs in Strong Offensive Showing Friday

MORAGA, CALIF. – The UIC baseball team opened the 2023 regular season Friday, beginning with a double-header at St. Mary's.


 
GAME 1
  • Both offenses came to play in game one on Friday, combining for 25 hits and 18 runs scored.
  • The Gaels jumped out to an early three-run lead against Flames starting pitcher Tyler Ingram in the first inning.
  • The Flames wasted no time answering back, scoring four runs of their own in the next half inning to take a 4-3 lead. Bobby Grimes earned the first two RBI of the 2023 regular season with a double down the left field line, scoring Zane Zielinski and Max Farfan.
  • Saint Mary's would again respond with four runs of its own to re-gain the lead, chasing Ingram after four innings, and five earned runs.
  • After a Gaels error scored Cole Conn in the fifth inning, Max Farfan slugged the Flames' first home run of the season, a two-run shot to score Charlie Szykowny. Farfan's home run tied the game at seven at the time.
  • The Gaels re-took the lead in the sixth, but a Zane Zielinski two-RBI single in the seventh and a Rayth Petersen RBI double in the eighth swayed the game in the Flames favor, and the bullpen combination of Zak Gould and Ryan Karst surrendered only one run in five innings of work, while striking out seven.
  • The Flames would go on to win 10-8, their second season in a row winning the opening contest of the season.
GAME 2
  • UIC had a much better start to the second game of the double-header Friday, as a Ryan Nagelbach first inning two-run home run immediately put the Flames out front.
  • After the Gaels cut the deficit in half in the third inning, Charlie Szykowny belted a three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning to put UIC ahead 5-1.
  • Freshman Jackson Bessette recorded the first RBI of his collegiate career in the top of the eighth, making the score 6-3 at the time.
  • Saint Mary's would score a run in the eighth and one in the ninth, but the Flames were able to hold on and earn the double header sweep by a score of 6-5.
  • Kade Lancour earned the victory in his first start as a Flame, going 5.2 innings and allowing just three earned runs.
 
The Flames will continue the series against Saint Mary's tomorrow, with an afternoon contest scheduled for 3:00 p.m. CT.
