LEXINGTON, Ky. – The UIC women's basketball couldn't fend off FIU (13-19) in the consolation bracket of the Women's Basketball Invitational at the Clive M. Beck Center Saturday afternoon, 68-65
.
UIC was led offensively by junior
Kristian Young, who scored a season-high 21 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and had four assists. Senior
Tiana Jackson also scored a season-high 13 points in the match-up, while junior
Danyel Middleton netted 14 points.
COMMENT FROM HEAD COACH ASHLEEN BRACEY
"Tough battle tonight. When you have the opportunity to play in March you need a complete, 40-minute effort," UIC head coach
Ashleen Bracey said. "We battled some foul trouble and had a rough 3
rd quarter that was difficult to overcome. We are looking forward to our final opportunity and we will be prepared to compete for 40 minutes."
FIRST HALF
- The Flames started the game off strong on a 7-0 run with shots made by Josie Filer, Jaida McCloud, Sara Zabrecky and Danyel Middleton.
- UIC finished the first quarter shooting 54% of the field with a 16-10 lead entering the second quarter.
- Senior Tiana Jackson started the second quarter red hot, landing a three pointer and a second chance layup to score UIC's first five points. She finished the quarter scoring eight of the 12 points for the Flames in the quarter.
- Kristian Young led all scorers after the first twenty minutes of play, going 100% from beyond the arc, sinking both of her three pointers.
SECOND HALF
- Middleton had her best quarter in the third offensively, scoring nine of the Flames 16 points as the team shot a collective 37.5% from the field.
- After three, the Flames found themselves trailing for the first time all game, 51-44.
- The Panthers extended their lead up to a 10 midway through the fourth, but through UIC's work from the charity stripe (7-for-10), the Flames cut it to just four with less than two and a half minutes left in the game.
- The Panthers secured the win after sinking a pair of free throws in the closing seconds and the Flames couldn't convert on the offensive side.
