Baseball Drops Conference-Opening Double-Header Saturday

Salukis Spoil Flames' First Ever Missouri Valley Conference Games

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The UIC baseball team (8-10, 0-2 MVC) opened its inaugural season of Missouri Valley Conference play Saturday, beginning with a double-header on the road at Southern Illinois. (11-12, 2-0 MVC). The Salukis took the victory in game one, and handed the Flames a walk-off loss in the second game of the day.

GAME 1
  • The Salukis jumped on top early in game one Saturday, as reigning Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year Kaeber Rog doubled to right center in the first inning, bringing home Ryan Rodriguez on a close play at the plate to put SIU up 1-0.
  • UIC would answer in the fourth inning, as Charlie Szykowny doubled with one out, and come around to score on an AJ Henkle RBI groundout to first to tie the game at 1-1.

  • The tie game would not last long, however, as Rog drove in his second run of the game with a solo home run to center field in the fourth inning.
  • Bennett Eltoft doubled the Saluki advantage in the seventh inning with a solo shot to right center field, bringing the score to 3-1.
  • Cole Conn brought the Flames within one in the eighth, bringing home Bobby Grimes on another RBI groundout.
  • The Salukis added three insurance runs in the home half of the eighth, including a two-run home run from Eltoft, his second of the game.
  • The Flames were unable to come back in the top half of the ninth and dropped game one by a final score of 6-2.

GAME 2
  • Defense and pitching were the dominant themes in the second game of the double-header, as both starting pitchers gave their sides a quality outing.
  • The game was scoreless through the first five innings, before the Flames finally broke through in the top of the sixth, scoring the game's first run on a wild pitch.

  • The Salukis would answer quickly, as a sixth inning sacrifice fly leveled the score at 1-1.
  • Brandon Bak was incredibly efficient in his fourth start of the season, giving the Flames seven and two thirds strong innings and allowing just one run.
  • Matt Zahora came on in relief in the eighth inning, and after getting the final out of the eighth, Zahora hit a batter to open the ninth, and Steven Loden came to the plate and walked the game off with a two-run home run to left center.

The Flames and Salukis will close out their three-game series on Sunday, with first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m. CT. All the action from Itchy Jones Stadium can be seen live on ESPN+.
