Softball Finishes Non-Conference Tournament Play at Governors Classic Beginning Friday

UIC is one of the four teams set to compete at Cathi Maynard Park over the weekend

CLARKSVILLE, TENN. – The UIC softball team (0-17) is set to close tournament play beginning Friday, when they partake in Austin Peay's Governors Classic over the weekend.

AUSTIN PEAY (7-7)
  • The Flames and the Governors will be battling it out at the diamond for the first time in over 16 years.
  • In their lone match-up, Austin Peay defeated UIC on Mar. 3, 2007, by a final score of 6-4.
  • Four members of Austin Peay are currently batting over .300 in its first 14 games of the season; senior Gabi Apiag (.359), sophomore Kylie Campbell (.349), graduate transfer Lexi Osowski-Anderson (.333) and senior Kendyl Weinzapfel (.326).
  • Junior Jordan Benfiel has pitched nine games for the Governors, pitching 54.1 innings with 59 strikeouts and a 2.71 ERA.
  • UIC opens the tournament against the hosts on Friday, first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT. They finish off Saturday against the Governors at 5:30 p.m.
 
DAYTON (6-9)
  • The Flames and Flyers will be competing for the first time in over three years this weekend. They are tied overall in the series, 2-2.
  • They last met on the diamond back in 2020, competing in the Eastern Kentucky Invitational that began on Mar. 6. Dayton won the first game, 12-8 but UIC came back and won the game the next day, 6-5.
  • Sophomore Emma Schutter has had a strong start in the batters box for the Flyers. She leads the team in batting average (.447) and total hits (21).
  • Freshman Izzy Kemp has been seeing a lot of time in the circle for Dayton. She has a team-leading ERA (1.46), strikeouts (50) and innings pitched (33.2).
  • The Flames begin their Saturday against Dayton, first pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. The second game against Dayton will conclude UIC's time in the Governors Classic Sunday also at 10 a.m.
 The other team in the tournament that UIC will not face will be fellow member of the Missouri Valley Conference in Belmont (11-6). They will, however, be coming to Flames Field for a weekend series in conference play beginning on Friday, April 6.
