Women's Tennis Edges Out DePaul for First Time Ever

The Blue Demons were Ranked as High as 67th Nationally

CHICAGO – The UIC women's tennis team (11-9, 4-3 MVC) rewrote history on Friday after beating DePaul for the first time ever. During the two teams' sixth meeting, the Flames came out victorious (4-3), breaking DePaul's five-game winning streak over UIC.

The Blue Demons were ranked as high 67th nationally by the ITA (Feb. 28), proving the win to be a big one for the Flames. DePaul also stands out in the Big East Conference, with a record of 6-1. Their only conference loss is to Xavier, the 2022 Big East champions.

DOUBLES SINGLES
  • DePaul went on to control all six singles courts to start the contest. Zara Ryan dropped her match at No. 4 singles (0-6, 2-6).
  • UIC found itself down 3-0 early when Paula Rodriguez Gregoris wasn't able to hold on at No. 5.
  • Agnes Gustafsson redeemed the Flames with a three-set victory at No. 1 singles. She lost the first set 4-6, going on to win the other two 7-5, 6-0.
  • It was a similar situation for Natalia Nikolopoulou on court two. She fell 4-6 the first set, but won the second and third 6-4, 6-0.
  • The Flames continued to chip away at the score as Tamara Malazonia battled through a tiebreaker 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3) at No. 3. That point evened out the score between the two teams.
  • Cora-Lynn von Dungern solidified the win for the Flames at No. 6, outscoring her opponent 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.
FLAMES ON FIRE
  • Friday's win makes it three in a row for Agnes Gustafsson at No. 1 singles, putting her overall record at 13-10.
  • Ana Jover and Gustafsson are on a two-match win streak together at No. 1 doubles. The two have won majority of the times they have paired up (9 out of 13 matches).
  • Natalia Nikolopoulou has won eight out of her last nine matches at singles positions three or two. Her overall record sits at 19-9.
  • Tamara Malazonia is on a two-match win streak, looking to add one more on Sunday.

COACH'S COMMENT

Head Coach Shannon Tully: "This was an extremely hot, physical battle for Chicago. This match was very similar to our 4-3 loss last weekend to Illinois State, but today, we figured out how to come out on top. One by one, our 1-3 and 6 players put points together and won each their matches in 3 sets. The overall score could not have been any closer, and I feel that we've gained some valuable ground today after gutting out this victory."

UP NEXT

The Flames will now focus on their last Missouri Valley Conference match before the MVC Championship. They face Missouri State on Sunday, following a brief ceremony to honor the graduating class: Ana Jover, Natalia Nikolopoulou, and Cora-Lynn von Dungern. The match will begin at 9 a.m. at XS Tennis Village.
