Softball Finishes Road Trip Falling to Valparaiso

Multi-Hit Games Off the Bats of Anna Walker and Hailey Cowing

VALPARAISO, Ind – The UIC softball team concluded its four-game road trip Wednesday, coming up short against Valparaiso, 4-0.
  • Sophomore Jojo Santiago earned the Flames their first hit in the game when she squeezed a groundball past the Valpo's second basemen.
  • Junior Anna Walker early on earned her fourth hit in the past week with a single out to left field. She followed that up later in the game by smacking a double to left center. Walker now leads UIC with 25 hits this season and obtained her second multi-hit game this month.
  • Earning her first hit since Belmont on April 8, sophomore Hailey Cowing smacked a base hit to left field early in the game. She followed that up with another base hit in the game for her first multi-hit performance since playing #17 Northwestern on Mar. 21.
  • Starting in just her 13th game of the season, junior Emma Crowley struck a ball past Valparaiso's Easton Seib in the circle for her second hit in three games. Behind the dish, Crowley caught a Beacon runner attempting to steal second late in the game for her fifth throw-out of the season.
  • Senior Christina Toniolo started in her 15th game in the circle and pitched 3.0 innings for the Flames, only walking one.
  • Junior Miranda Gomez came in for a relief appearance, pitching 2.1 innings and striking out two.
NEW MILESTONE
  • With a base hit late in the game, sophomore Grace Fleming extended her hitting streak to four games. She now has the second-longest hit streak of the season behind redshirt senior Maica Ingles, who had a five-game hitting streak earlier in the season.
  • After her third hit in three games, Santiago now has the second-best batting average for UIC at .234.
  • Gomez has now struck out 13 batters in the month of April. That has accounted for one-third of her season strikeouts (29).
LOOKING AHEAD
  • The Flames return home to open an eight-game homestand starting Friday beginning with Evansville, scheduled for 5 p.m.
  • Every game will be available to stream on ESPN+ or listen to live on the Flames Network.
  • This will be the first time the Aces and the Flames are set to battle it out since 2018. They have played nine times before, with UIC leading the overall series, 5-4.
  • Saturday's 2 p.m. game is Youth Sports Day. Fans will receive a souvenir bat sponsored by Xfinity. Members of the softball team will be signing autographs postgame.
