UIC Secures Thrilling Walk-Off Win Against Evansville

A Collective Effort Wills the Flames to Victory

CHICAGO – The UIC softball team overcame a four-run deficit to defeat Evansville in extra innings Friday night, 7-6.

COMMENT FROM HEAD COACH LYNN CURYLO

"Every single one contributed, whether that was at the plate or defense as well as in the dugout," UIC head coach Lynn Curylo said. "They trusted one another. We have been spending a lot of time saying, 'focus on the process, focus on what makes you great.' I feel like it played out in this game, and I could not be prouder."

COMMENT FROM SENIOR ALANNAH CRAN

"There was just no quit, we were fighting through every single inning" senior Alannah Cran said. "Our pitching staff did a great job working together today and getting that collective win."

COMMENT FROM GRACE FLEMING

"Everyone was able to contribute to this win in one way," Sophomore Grace Fleming said. "I'm really glad we all came together, and we scrape one by. I love those extra-inning games; they are so hyped and so much passion."

  • In her 21st start of the season, senior Christina Toniolo started off red hot to begin the game, striking out three Aces in the top of the first.

  • By the third inning, Toniolo already surpassed her season-high in strikeouts with eight in the game. She pitched a total of 4.2 innings throughout the game.

  • The bottom of the third inning saw two Flames come across home plate. Senior Alannah Cran scored on a squeeze bunt laid down by sophomore Grace Fleming. That was followed by an RBI groundout from Larissa Ortiz scoring Hailey Cowing.

  • Junior Miranda Gomez came into the circle in relief with a runner on third. She ended the inning after striking out back-to-back batters to leave the runner stranded.

  • The Flames tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four runs off RBIs from Cowing, senior Carlee Jo Clark, and freshman Gianna Richy.

  • UIC walked off in extras after a pop fly off the bat of Cran was dropped by Evansville's right fielder. Cran later beat the throw at home to secure the win.

THE TAKEAWAYS

  • This is UIC's first win against a Missouri Valley Conference opponent since joining the league.

  • This is the Flames' first extra innings victory after having played in four of them throughout the season.

  • Scoring Clark on her base hit in the sixth, Gianna Richy earned her first RBI as a member of the Flames.

  • Fleming extended her hitting streak to five games with a double in the game and now ties redshirt senior Maica Ingles for longest hitting streak on the team.

YOUTH SPORTS DAY

  • Saturday's game is Youth Sports Day. Younger fans in attendance will receive a souvenir bat sponsored by Xfinity. Members of the softball team will be signing autographs postgame.

  • The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. It will be available to stream on ESPN+.

  • The series will conclude Sunday with a noon start time.
