Â
CHICAGO – The UIC baseball team closed out its series against Indiana State Sunday, as the two teams played a double-header at Curtis Granderson Stadium.
Â
GAME ONE
- Rayth Petersen opened the scoring for UIC in game one, as his first home run of the year, a solo shot to left field, gave the Flames a 1-0 lead.
Â
Â
- Mike Sears would homer in back-to-back plate appearances in the third and fourth innings, giving the Sycamores a 3-1 advantage. Randal Diaz added a solo home run in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 4-1.
- A Cole Conn fielder's choice in the bottom of the fifth would cut the deficit to 4-2.
- The Sycamores put up six runs, including a three-run home run from Miguel Rivera to put Indiana State up 10-2.
- Breck Nowik answered for the Flames, belting his second home run of the season to bring the deficit to seven runs.
Â
Â
- Charlie Szykowny narrowed the deficit even further, as he launched his third home run of the series to left center field, pulling the score to 10-5.
Â
Â
- AJ Henkle would bring in two more runs in the home half of the ninth with a two-RBI double, but that would be all the Flames could muster, falling by a final score of 13-7.
Â
GAME TWO
- Jeff Zack took the mound for the Flames in game two, and gave the Flames a solid four scoreless innings before surrendering four runs before recording an out in the top of the fifth, chasing him from the game. The Sycamores would add one more run in the fifth off reliever Tyler Ingram, entering the sixth inning with a 5-0 lead.
- After the Sycamores added two more runs in the top of the sixth, the Flames finally broke through against Indiana State starter Lane Miller, as a Bobby Grimes solo home run served as just the third Flames hit of the game and brought the score to 7-1.
Â
Â
- The Flames would only tally the one run against Miller, as he would go eight strong before passing it off to Cameron Holycross to shut down UIC in the ninth, earning the Sycamores the 10-1 victory.
Â
The Flames will return to action Tuesday, as they welcome Northern Illinois to Curtis Granderson Stadium for a 6:00 p.m. first pitch. Due to the concurrent softball game at Flames field, only live stats will be available for Tuesday's contest. UIC returns to Missouri Valley competition next weekend, as they head to Murray State for a three-game set against the Racers, beginning Friday night at 5:00 p.m. CT.
