CHICAGO - In its second Chicago Cup game of the season, the UIC men's soccer team carried the majority of the match, but fell to DePaul 2-1.
COACH'S COMMENTS
"We had a great energy over the course of the entire match Friday," said head coach Sean Phillips. "Our pressing was very good over the course of the game and when it was broken, our transition was able to manage the dangerous moments. I really thought the overall performance was positive. In the game though, it is the result that matters. To DePaul's credit, they took advantage of two of our mistakes and did not break despite our tremendous pressure on them. I am confident this group will continue to improve from this game to our next game against Loyola as we did from our game against Northwestern to this one."
FIRST HALF
- Three minutes into the contest, the Flames had a penalty kick attempt after a DePaul foul. However, the Blue Demons goalkeeper was up to the task, saving Josh Torres' strike from the spot.Â
- UIC carried much of the half until the 29th minute when DePaul scored after creating a turnover in UIC's defensive third.Â
- The Flames' response was very positive with Luka Nedic forcing a DePaul turnover and Torres lifting the ball over the Blue Demons defense into the goal at the 34' mark to tie the game at 1-1.Â
- DePaul would strike again nine minutes later, finishing off a corner kick at 43' to take a 2-1 lead.Â
- UIC responded almost immediately with Andrew Moreno firing a strike from distance, but the shot hit off the left post of DePaul's goal.
SECOND HALF
- The second half saw much of the same effort and attacking pressure from UIC.Â
- Andres Lemus's ball across the penalty area was met by Darien Martin whose redirect was just outside the back post.Â
- Josh Torres got in behind the Blue Demons' defense only to have a penalty decision not made in his favor.Â
- UIC continued to pressure DePaul's penalty area but was not able to find the game-tying goal before time expired.
