DES MOINES, IOWA – The UIC softball team split a doubleheader against Drake Saturday afternoon. The Flames fell in Game One 3-0, but bounced back with a victory in Game Two, winning 5-4.
COMMENT FROM JUNIOR MIRANDA GOMEZ
"We did a really good job today, bouncing back in the second game. The offense was huge in our second game; we came out hot off the bat, which was awesome. Our defense had my back the whole time I was pitching in the circle, I couldn't have done it without them."
GAME ONE
- Sophomore Hailey Cowing began the game with a double over the head of Drake's right fielder, her first extra base hit since Apr. 23.
- Senior Christina Toniolo started her 27th game in the circle. She started strong for UIC, striking out two of the first three batters she faced.
- Senior Alannah Cran extended her hitting streak to nine games when she slapped a base hit to left field in the third inning.
- Senior Jordyn Cebedo earned a pinch-hitting single to centerfield in the seventh, her first hit since Apr. 4.
- Toniolo completed the game pitching for the Flames. She threw 6.0 innings, striking out seven and allowing only one walk.
GAME TWO
- Junior Larisa Villa got the Flames on the board in the top of the second when she scored Emma Crowley on a shallow single to centerfield.
- Villa was later scored alongside freshman Tess Altevers Harris when Cowing hit a line shot to left center.
- In the fifth, junior Dee Dee Caskey smacked a ball down the left field line for a double, scoring junior Anna Walker.
- With a 4-2 lead in the seventh, senior Carlee Jo Clark beat out an infield error by Drake's shortstop, scoring Cran from third base to give UIC the 5-2 lead.
- Junior Miranda Gomez nearly threw a complete game. She pitched 6.1 innings, striking out three and walking two.
- Toniolo recorded the final two outs in the circle to earn the save.
