UIC Earns Series Win Against Drake

Collective Effort in the Circle Propels Flames to 5-2 Victory

DES MOINES, IOWA – The UIC softball team defeated Drake Sunday afternoon to secure a series victory, beating the Bulldogs 5-2.

"It was a really a whole pitching staff win today. I thought Emma Crowley, our catcher, did a great job behind the plate today. I was also really proud of our defense." 

GAME RECAP 

  • After both teams were scoreless over the first two innings, junior Larisa Villa started the third by crushing a ball over the left field wall for a solo home run to give the Flames an early 1-0 lead. 

  • Tied at 1-1 in the fifth, the Flames retook the lead following a line drive RBI by freshman Tess Altevers Harris. 

  • With the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, the Flames defense came up huge, as senior Carlee Jo Clark forced Drake's Abby Lightener to pop out to end the inning. 

  • In the bottom half of the inning, with bases loaded, junior Emma Clark hit a ground ball to Drake's shortstop, who fumbled it, scoring junior Anna Walker and Clark on the play to give the Flames the 4-1 lead. 

  • In the seventh, Walker scored senior Alannah Cran on a stand-up double to increase UIC's lead to 5-1.  

  • Senior Christina Toniolo finished the game in the circle for the Flames, pitching 2.0 innings and only allowing two hits to earn her second save of the series.  

NEWS AND NOTES 

  • Villa's homerun was the first of her UIC career. She also hit a single up the middle for her first multi-hit game of the season.  

  • Junior Miranda Gomez started the game in the circle for the Flames. She threw 43 pitches in 3.0 innings, not allowing a walk.  

  • Senior Carlee Jo Clark entered the circle in her 26th appearance for the season. She threw 2.0 innings, striking out one batter on 36 pitches. 

  • Altevers Harris' RBI double was her fourth extra base hit and her third double of the season. She now has seven RBI in the past nine games.  

  • Cran's bunt single in the seventh extended her hitting streak to 11 games.  

  • Walker finished the series against Drake with five walks. She leads the team with 20 walks in the season.  

2023 MVC SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP 

  • The Flames will be traveling to Carbondale, Illinois to compete in their first Missouri Valley Conference Softball Championship, which begins Wednesday. 

  • UIC will be the No. 11 seed in the MVC Championship. The team will face No. 6 Southern Illinois Wednesday evening, with a 7 p.m. scheduled first pitch.  

  • All games at the 2023 MVC Championship will be available to stream on ESPN+.
