Fort Lauderdale, Fla. – UIC men's soccer alumni Charlie Trout and Baggio Husidic will be on the sidelines as head coach and assistant coach for the Puerto Rico men's national soccer team in a 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup qualifying match Saturday night at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.
Â
Puerto Rico will be taking on Suriname in Saturday's game, with the victor facing the winner of Martinique and Saint Lucia on June 20. The winner of that game will advance to the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup final rounds.
Â
Serving as the head coach for Puerto Rico, Charlie Trout appeared in 59 matches for the Flames from 2007-09, helping UIC advance to the 2007 NCAA Elite Eight and the 2008 NCAA Sweet 16. The former UIC midfielder and captain scored 12 goals and assisted on 12 others in his three seasons, helping UIC win the 2007 Horizon League Championship and capture the 2008 Horizon League regular season title.
Â
UIC alum Baggio Husidic is also an assistant on the Puerto Rico coaching staff. The 2008 First Team All-American finished his time at UIC with 31 points in 65 matches, including 12 goals and seven assists. He was also a key member of the 2007 NCAA Elite Eight team and the 2008 NCAA Sweet 16 team.
Â
"We are very proud of what Charlie has done in his short time as manager of the Puerto Rican Men's National Team," commented UIC head coach
Sean Phillips. "Having Baggio as his top assistant makes the story even better. We are excitedly looking forward to supporting them as they embark on their Gold Cup qualification stage matches."
Â
Trout is 2-0 in 2023 as head coach of the Puerto Rican men's national team. Puerto Rico defeated the British Virgin Islands 3-1 and the Cayman Islands 5-1 in the League C Group Stage of the CONCACAF Nations League in March.
