CHICAGO (Aug. 17, 2023) – The UIC women's soccer team opened the 2023 regular season at Flames Field Thursday evening, and played to a 2-2 draw against Toledo.
Makenna Maloy and
Kaysey Castro scored goals for the Flames before the Rockets answered back.
FIRST HALF
- The Flames kicked off the scoring with an unassisted goal from midfielder Makenna Maloy at the 12-minute mark.
- Ten minutes later, Toledo's Madison Medalle scored a goal for the Rockets, evening out the score 1-1.
- Lauren Kieser made two crucial saves in the match, facing only two shots on goal.
SECOND HALF
- Play became more aggressive in the second half, with yellow cards given out to both teams.
- A goal from Kaysey Castro put the Flames ahead 2-1 with 12 minutes left to play in the match.
- Minutes later another goal from the Rockets, scored by Madison Medalle evened out the score again.
COACH'S COMMENTS
"I think both of our goals were well taken. We showed that we were active in those areas around the goal. We have some things to sort out, but I'm happy overall with the general performance of the team." said head coach
David Nikolic.
UP NEXT
The Flames will now prepare to take on Big Ten opponent Wisconsin on Sunday, Aug. 20. The contest begins at 1 p.m. at the Dan McClimon Memorial Soccer Complex in Madison, Wisc. Live stats will be available via uicflames.com.
