CHICAGO (Aug. 31, 2023) - Behind a three-goal scoring frenzy, the UIC women's soccer team shut out Marquette 3-0 for the program's first win of the season. The victory is UIC's first win against a BIG EAST school in program history.
COACH'S COMMENTS
"The energy was great from the start, we showed we can put a complete performance together," said head coach
David Nikolic. "We had a solid section between the 30-minute mark and the start of the second half where we got the lead through some opportunistic goals. We created the corner kicks we were trying to create. To start the second half off the way we did and to come out with the goal by
Makena Shaw was great. That was the finish, but there were seven or eight passes between
Riley Collett and Makenna before that really opened up the game for us and I'm real happy with their play.
FIRST HALF
- The match started off slow until Yulexi Diaz scored the first goal of the match at the 31-minute mark. The goal was Diaz's first collegiate goal and her first point since recording an assist against Robert Morris in Oct. 2021.
- Minutes later, at the 34th minute, Bella Baker was able to put away the UIC corner kick with a powerful header to the back of the net. The goal was the sophomore's second of the season.
- Marquette had its fair share of offensive opportunities, taking four shots in the half. UIC goalkeeper Sara Sanabria was able to stop all of the Golden Eagles attempts on net.
SECOND HALF
- In the 50th minute, Marquette tried to cut its deficit to two, but Sanabria made a diving stop on the Golden Eagles shot.
- Marquette searched for a goal until the final minute. However, Sara Sanabria's four saves kept the BIG EAST team off of the scoreboard and preserved UIC's first victory of the season.
