Men's Soccer Battles to Draw With Oakland Friday

Flames Secure Tie With 74th Minute Equalizer

CHICAGO (Sept. 1, 2023) – The UIC men's soccer team (2-0-1) continued its four-match homestand Friday, as it hosted former Horizon League foe Oakland (0-2-1) on a beautiful Windy City evening at Flames Field. After a dominating first half where UIC out-shot Oakland 15-3, the Golden Grizzlies netted a go-ahead goal early in the second half, and the Flames answered in the closing minutes to earn a draw with a 2-2 final score.

COACH'S COMMENTS
"I was very pleased with how we came out in the first half," commented head coach Sean Phillips. "I knew if we came out the same way in the second half, we would likely be able to push another goal or two across the board. Give credit to Oakland, they made adjustments at the half and were very efficient with the chances they were given."

FIRST HALF
  • Less than three minutes into Friday night's contest, UIC's first shot of the match, a Jesus De Vicente left-footed shot inside the box, deflected off of Joshua Torres, giving the sophomore his second goal in as many matches, and putting the Flames ahead 1-0.

  • The Flames maintained a decided offensive advantage in the first half, as they held the Golden Grizzlies without a shot for the first 27 minutes of the contest.
  • In the 28th minute, the Golden Grizzlies equalized on a goal from Luke Benford, as Oakland drew the match level at 1-1.
  • UIC entered the locker room with a 15-3 advantage in shots, but the score remained 1-1 at the break.

SECOND HALF
  • The Golden Grizzlies came out of the locker room on the front foot offensively, as the first event of the second half was an Oakland goal in the 46th minute. The Donavan Phillip tally put the Golden Grizzlies ahead 2-1.
  • The Flames managed just three shots over the next 23 minutes of the match, but they picked their time to move forward, and Sidney Warden equalized the match in the 74th minute.

  • The Flames grabbed momentum after the Warden equalizer, but were unable to convert on any of their three final shot attempts to grab the late winner.

UP NEXT
