Men's Soccer Takes Down Wisconsin in Convincing Fashion

Flames Down Badgers Behind Strong Attacking Play

CHICAGO (Sept. 4, 2023) – The UIC men's soccer team closed out its four-match home stand on Monday evening, as it welcomed Wisconsin to Flames Field on another steamy night in Chicago, with kick-off temperatures hovering around 90 degrees. The Badgers were riding a high coming into the match, as they had most recently defeated #2 Kentucky four days prior in Madison.

The Flames jumped on top early with a 21st minute goal from Andres Moreno, his first of the season. Veljko Radovanovic added a late second half tally to double the advantage, and UIC goalkeeper Oren Asher made several crucial saves to preserve the clean sheet.

COACH'S COMMENTS
"This kind of a win can galvanize a team," commented head coach Sean Phillips after the 2-0 victory Monday. "We were much more opportunistic with our chances on the night, and Oren made a couple of key saves to keep us in the match."

FIRST HALF
  • After the Badgers took the first five shots of the match, the Flames picked their spot to go forward, and after a Bart Muns shot missed the mark, Sidney Warden chipped a shot on goal that was turned aside, but Andres Moreno was there to clean up the rebound and put the ball into the back of the net to put UIC ahead 1-0 in the 21st minute.
  • The Badgers would out-shoot the Flames 8-4 in the first half, but the UIC defense held strong and kept the 1-0 lead into the locker room at the half.

SECOND HALF
  • The Badgers continued their onslaught of shots in the second frame, as four of the first six shots of the second half came from the legs of Wisconsin forwards.
  • The Flames built a counter-attack in the 70th minute, and Veljko Radovanovic was the beneficiary of a great Luka Nedic pass, and doubled the Flames advantage with a right-footed goal.
  • Despite offensive outbursts in the final 20 minutes from Wisconsin, the Flames were able to keep the Badgers off the score sheet, and earn their first victory over a Big Ten program since a 2021 victory over Northwestern.
