Men's Soccer Closes Road Trip With Win Over Chicago State

Bart Muns Tallies Third Goal in Last Two Matches to Lead UIC to VIctory

CHICAGO (Sept. 19, 2023) – The 25th ranked UIC men's soccer team (6-1-1, 1-0-0 MVC) closed out its four-match road trip Tuesday, as it traveled across town to take on Chicago State. The Flames and Cougars met for just the fourth time in series history, and the Flames used a first half Bart Muns goal and an early second half tally from Paul Brauckmann to earn a 2-1 victory, their second in a row and fourth in their last five matches.

"We knew coming in that it would be a tough rivalry match," commented head coach Sean Phillips after the match. "I was pleased with our play in the first half, but Chicago State deserves a lot of credit for sticking with it and applying pressure on us down the stretch. We're always pleased with a road victory, especially leading into a crucial conference match on Saturday."

FIRST HALF
  • After a slow offensive start for both teams, Bart Muns (Amsterdam, Netherlands/Santa Barbara CC) put the Flames ahead in the 25th minute, scoring his third goal in the last two matches.
  • UIC held Chicago State to just two shots in the first half, and would take a 1-0 advantage into the halftime break.
SECOND HALF
  • The Flames jumped out to a flying start to the second half, as a Paul Brauckmann (Welver, Germany) floating header struck the right upright and found the back of the net to double the UIC advantage to 2-0 in the 50th minute.
  • Chicago State ratcheted up the offensive intensity after going down 2-0, and after Andres Vasquez (Pittsburgh, Penn.) made a tremendous diving save, the Cougars came back on the attack and cut the UIC advantage to just 2-1 in the 63rd minute.
  • UIC took notice and upped the defensive pressure, not allowing a Cougars shot on goal following their second half goal. The Flames went on to win by a 2-1 final score.
The Flames return home this weekend for the first time since Sept. 4, as they host Drake as part of Flames Fest presented by Xfinity. Kickoff Saturday night from Flames Field is set for 7:00 pm CT, and admission to the match is free, and will include family friendly activities for all ages.
