Men's Soccer Topples Loyola to Remain Unbeaten on the Season

Flames Use Two Free Kick Goals to Drop Ramblers Friday

CHICAGO (Sept. 8, 2023) – The UIC men's soccer team opened up a four-match road trip Friday, as it traveled cross-town rival Loyola for a match-up under the lights. The Flames hadn't beaten the Ramblers at Hoyne Field since 2009 coming into the match, but a pair of free kick goals earned UIC its second straight win on the season, winning by a final score of 2-1.

COACH'S COMMENTS
"We started the match strong in the first 10 minutes," commented head coach Sean Phillips. "Loyola turned on the pressure for the final 30 minutes of the first half, but we did a good job of making adjustments at the break. Both of our free kick goals were beautifully taken, and we did what needed to be done late in the match to earn the victory."

FIRST HALF
  • Jesus De Vicente (Casas Bajas, Spain / Iowa Western) opened the scoring with a beautiful free-kick goal in the fourth minute.
  • The Flames were out-shot 7-4 in the first 45 minutes, as Loyola responded to the early set-back with sustained offensive pressure.
  • The Ramblers notched an equalizer minutes before the halftime whistle, and the two sides went into the locker rooms level at 1-1.

SECOND HALF
  • Oren Asher (Hetzliya, Israel / Rutgers) made several crucial saves in the second half to keep the match tied.
  • A 67th minute free kick goal from Paul Brauckmann (Welver, Germany) proved to be the difference in the match, as the Flames would go on to win 2-1.
