Men’s Tennis drops season opener at Eastern Kentucky

The Colonels took down the Flames 6-1 in UIC’s first competition of the 2024 season

RICHMOND, Ky. (Jan. 18, 2023) – A strong UIC debut in singles competition for Randy Wilson (Miami, Fla./Florida Gulf Coast) wasn't enough as the UIC men's tennis team fell to Eastern Kentucky 6-1 in its first match of the 2024 season.
 
Thursday's competition was UIC's first against Eastern Kentucky in program history.

"Today's match was not the start to the season we were hoping for, but I believe in our program. Our team will be ready for another opportunity to compete tomorrow and look forward to facing Bellarmine."

MATCH RECAP
  • The Flames fell in the doubles point to the Colonels 2-0. UIC's No. 1 doubles pair of Edoardo Bottino (Genoa, Italy/Queens University) and Gustavo Schwebel (Salvador, Brazil/Colegio Antonio Vieira) had a 5-2 lead in their match, but the match was not finished due to EKU winning the other two doubles matches.
  • Randy Wilson (Miami, Fla./Florida Gulf Coast) was the lone Flames competitor to win a singles competition Thursday. The transfer defeated EKU's Mario Monclus Martin 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 1 singles.
  • At No. 2 singles, Aleksa Bucan (Belgrade, Serbia/Arkansas) won his first set 7-5, before ultimately falling to Eastern Kentucky's Evzen Holis in three sets.
