Flames Break One School Record, Tie Another in 1-0 Win Over Evansville

UIC posts record-setting fourth straight shutout and ties program record by going unbeaten in six consecutive games.

CHICAGO (Oct. 10, 2024) — Playing its second game in less than 48 hours, the UIC women's soccer team (5-7-2, 4-0-2 MVC) rose to the occasion in record-setting fashion Thursday night with a 1-0 Missouri Valley Conference win over Evansville (1-6-5, 0-3-3) at Flames Field. With the victory, the Flames set a school record with their fourth consecutive shutout and ties another program mark by extending their current unbeaten streak to six in a row.

As was the case in Tuesday's 3-0 win over Indiana State, Thursday's victory was fueled by a new goal scorer. Sophomore midfielder Kamryn Brickman (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) came off the bench to score her first career goal with 14:23 remaining in the second half, hammering home a left-footed shot from 15 yards out. Junior defender Chopper Carriere (Austin, Texas/Vandegrift) picked up her first career assist on the play, deftly settling a cross near the penalty spot for Brickman's game-winner.

The UIC defense did the rest, paced by graduate student goalkeeper Francesca Faraci (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South/Florida) who made five saves, including two leaping deflections to tip Evansville shots over the bar in the closing minutes.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Prior to this season, the UIC school record for consecutive shutouts was three, set on four occasions (2015, twice in 2019, and most recently from Oct. 6-13, 2022).
  • The Flames also posted a school-record six-game unbeaten streak from Oct. 12-Nov. 7, 2019, winning all six of those contests (UIC is 4-0-2 during its current unbeaten string).
  • At 4-0-2, the Flames are off to the best six-game start in conference play in the program's 10-year history, having previously started 4-2 in Horizon League action in 2019 and 2020-21 (the COVID-affected season), as well as 3-1-2 in their inaugural season in the Valley in 2022.
  • UIC improves to 2-1 all-time against Evansville, with all three series games finishing 1-0 with the home team winning all three times on goals inside the final 15 minutes.
  • Of UIC's eight goals in MVC games this year, six have been the first goal of the season for the scorer — Riley Collett (UNI), Makenna Maloy (Murray State), Madison Ferris, Hannah Gryzik and Amina Marin (Indiana State), and Kamryn Brickman (Evansville). The Flames' other two goals in conference play have also been scored by Collett (UNI and Belmont).
  • In its six conference games this season, UIC has five shutouts, has outscored its opponents by a 8-1 margin and has trailed for only 5:36 (the time it took the Flames to find the equalizer after Murray State scored on a penalty kick on Sept. 26).
  • Faraci has not allowed a goal within the run of play in her last 552:09 (and just one goal total - the MSU PK), dating back to UIC's Sept. 12 game against Kansas City.
