Volleyball Gears Up for Southern Illinois and Missouri State on the Road this Weekend

The Flames open a two-week road trip Missouri Valley Conference play starting Friday.

CARBONDALE, ILL. (Oct. 31, 2024) – The UIC volleyball team (16-7, 8-3 MVC) embarks on a two-week road trip in Missouri Valley Conference play, beginning with facing off against Southern Illinois (10-12, 3-8 MVC) and Missouri State (9-14, 3-8 MVC) over the weekend.

LAST TIME VS. SOUTHERN ILLINOIS
  • The Flames dominated in their last meeting against the Salukis, winning in straight sets at Credit Union 1 Arena on Oct. 12.
  • Sophomore Gabi Peter (Gilbert, Ill./Hampshire) led the attack for the Flames, tallying ten kills.
  • Senior Kayanna Jones (Normal, Ill./Normal West), sophomore Za'Niya Boyles (Columbia, S.C./Gray Collegiate Academy) and freshman Antonie Kelnárová (Prague, Czech Republic) all contributed seven kills in the win.
  • Southern Illinois was one of four MVC opponents that the Flames has swept this season, including Bradley (10-13, 5-6 MVC), Indiana State (4-19, 1-10 MVC) and Valparaiso (14-9, 6-5 MVC).
 
LAST TIME VS. MISSOURI STATE
  • UIC went toe-to-toe with Missouri State in front of the home crowd at Credit Union 1 Arena on Oct. 11, coming out victorious after four sets of play.
  • Kelnárová led the Flames with a collegiate-high 16 kills and six blocks in the win. Peter also collected her first double-digit kill performance with 11 kills over the four sets.
  • Graduate student Zahria Woodard (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) collected 11 total blocks in the victory, her first double-digit block performance of the season.
  • Led by the duo of junior Cleo Lorenzo (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Elite) and sophomore Hannah Howard (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Ursula Academy/Eastern Michigan) with 18 digs a piece, the Flames finished with 75 digs collectively, the third-highest team mark this season.
 
LAST WEEKEND RECAP ILLINOIS STATE/BRADLEY
 
  • The Flames found continued success at home this past weekend, defeating Illinois State (11-13, 6-5 MVC) before sweeping Bradley (10-13, 5-6 MVC) at Credit Union 1 Arena.
  • Four Flames collected double-digit kills in the five-set thriller against the Redbirds: Peter (13), Lorenzo (12), Jones (11) and Kelnárová (11).
  • Lorenzo and Kelnárová continued their offensive momentum the next night against the Braves, each contributing 14 kills apiece over the three sets.
  • The Flames have sported a 5-2 record at home against opponents from The Valley with two more matches left in conference play at Credit Union 1 Arena.
