Fourth-Quarter Surge Propels Flames Past Northern Illinois, 69-66

Jalysa Stokes scores game-high 17 points in her UIC debut as Flames earn first win of the season.

DeKALB, Ill. (Nov. 27, 2024) — Senior guard Jalysa Stokes (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central/UMSL) scored a game-high 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting (4-of-6 from three-point range) to pace three UIC players in double figures as the Flames picked up their initial win of the 2024-25 season with a 69-66 victory at Northern Illinois on Wednesday night inside the NIU Convocation Center in DeKalb, Ill.

Senior guard/forward Makiyah Williams (Chicago, Ill./Trinity/Marquette) added 15 points, while graduate student guard Keimari Rimmer (Chicago, Ill./Proviso East/DePaul) turned in a well-balanced line with 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two blocks. Playing on her birthday, senior guard Sandra Frau-Garcia (Pego, Spain/Casper College) dished out a game-high seven assists, including a critical dime to senior forward Ky Dempsey-Toney (Franklin, N.J./Franklin) that put the Flames ahead for good just past the midpoint of the fourth quarter, followed by an even-more valuable old-fashioned three-point play with 4:04 left. Those twin plays were the highlights in a game-turning 8-0 run for UIC, which subsequently went 6-of-7 at the foul line in the final 2:13 to secure the win.
