FULLERTON, Calif. (Feb. 11, 2024) – The UIC softball team concluded its time at the Easton Classic Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 loss to Southern Utah (3-1) at Anderson Family Field in Fullerton, Calif.
COMMENT FROM HEAD COACH LYNN CURYLO
"We are going to learn from this weekend and we are going to come back stronger."
GAME RECAP
- Redshirt junior Alyssa McIntosh (Lancaster, Calif./Lancaster) was solid in the circle for the Flames, finishing four innings of pitching, not allowing a walk, and striking out one in her appearance.
- Junior Jo Jo Santiago (Channahon, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) collected UIC's first hit of the game in the top of the third inning, when she smacked the ball to right field for a single. She followed that with her first stolen base of the season, giving the Flames a runner in scoring position.
- Entering in relief for the Flames was graduate student Christina Toniolo (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) in the bottom of the fourth. In only seven pitches, Toniolo forced the Thunderbirds to fly out three consecutive times to end the inning quickly. She finished the game with two innings pitched, not allowing a single hit and only walking one batter before McIntosh reentered the circle in the bottom of the sixth inning.
- In the top of the seventh, senior Larisa Villa (La Habra, Calif./La Habra) collected a base hit after poking the ball through the left side of the infield.
- Down to their final out, pinch-hitting graduate student Alannah Cran (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard) moved Villa into scoring position before the Thunderbirds secured the victory via a fielder's choice.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
- After her late-inning base hit, Villa now leads the Flames with four hits this season. Four of her teammates are right behind her with three hits — Santiago, graduate student Carlee Jo Clark (Carol Stream, Ill./Southern Illinois) and junior Grace Fleming (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan).
- Villa and junior Larissa Ortiz (Romeoville, Ill./Wisconsin) are the lone Flames with extra base hits, each with a double.
- The Flames drew nine walks throughout the Easton Classic, with Clark and senior Anna Walker (Burnside, Ill./Parkland College) each leading the team with two apiece.
- All four members of the pitching staff saw time in the circle, but nobody pitched more than Clark, who threw 11 innings for the Flames in one start and two relief appearances.
