Men's Tennis Surges Past Cleveland State 5-2

The Flames have won four of their last five matches

CLEVELAND (Feb. 19, 2024) – The UIC men's tennis program (4-3) continued its winning ways as the Flames defeated former Horizon League foe Cleveland State 5-2 for its fourth victory in the program's last five matches.
 
The victory was UIC's first against Cleveland State since April 2007 and halted a 21 match win streak by the Vikings. Friday's win marked UIC's first road victory of the 2024 season.

MATCH RECAP
  • After switching up pairings in doubles competition, the Flames won the doubles point with 7-5 wins by Randy Wilson (Miami, Fla./Florida Gulf Coast) and Mihailo Savic (Smederevska Palanka, Serbia/Sportska Gimnazija) at the No. 1 position and Aleksa Bucan (Belgrade, Serbia/Arkansas) and Robinson Le Meur (Evreux, France/Sciences Po Bordeaux) at the No. 3 spot. All three doubles matches ended in 7-5 scores.  
  • In the singles competition, the Flames won four of their six matches, with two of the wins finishing in straight sets.
  • At No. 1 singles, Wilson won 6-3, 6-4 for his second win in a row.
  • After splitting the first two sets at No. 2 singles, Bucan pulled away in the third set to come away with a hard-fought three-set victory over Cleveland State's Lincoln Battle, serving his opponent his first loss of the 2024 season.
  • Facing the reigning Horizon League Singles Player of the Week, Le Meur dominated against his CSU opponent at No. 3 singles, winning in straight sets. The sophomore is currently on a five-match win streak.
  • In an exciting three-set match at No. 4 singles, Edoardo Bottino (Genoa, Italy/Queens University) came away with the victory over Cleveland State's previously undefeated Carl Gedlitschka. The senior is a perfect 5-0 when competing this season at the No. 4 singles spot and and is tied with Bucan and Le Meur for the most singles wins in 2024 with five.

UP NEXT
  • The Flames are back in competition tomorrow with a match against Duquesne (4-1)
  • Saturday's match will start at 3 p.m. CT from Alpha Tennis and Fitness of Pittsburgh.
  • The Dukes are riding a four-match win streak. Duquesne has won its past two matches via 7-0 sweeps.
  • Graduate student Jin Dassanayake is currently 5-0 for the Dukes at No. 2 singles and is one of two Duquesne student-athletes to remain unbeaten on the year, along with senior Kaipo Marshall (3-0).
