Flames Finish Weekend Road Trip with Win Over Duquesne

UIC defeated the Dukes 5-2 to finish the month of February with a 4-1 record

PITTSBURGH (Feb. 17, 2024) – The UIC men's tennis program (5-3) finished a fantastic month of February competition on a high note, as the Flames defeated Duquesne 5-2 Saturday afternoon.
 
With the victory, UIC has won three matches in a row and five of its last six matches. COMMENT FROM HEAD COACH JOVAN PARLIC

MATCH RECAP
 
  • In doubles competition, UIC's No. 2 team of Gustavo Schwebel (Salvador, Brazil/Colegio Antonio Vieira) and Edoardo Bottino (Genoa, Italy/Queens University) and the No. 3 pair of Aleksa Bucan (Belgrade, Serbia/Arkansas) and Robinson Le Meur (Evreux, France/Sciences Po Bordeaux) came away with 6-3 victories against their Duquesne counterparts. The Flames' No. 1 tandem of  Randy Wilson (Miami, Fla./Florida Gulf Coast) and Mihailo Savic (Smederevska Palanka, Serbia/Sportska Gimnazija) had a 5-4 lead, but their match went unfinished to due UIC already winning the doubles point.
  • The Flames won the doubles point for the third match in a row and for the sixth time in their last seven matches. UIC has won the doubles point in all five victories this season.
  • In singles competition, Bucan made quick work of his opponent at No. 2 singles, winning 6-1 in both sets to come away with his third win in a row. The senior is tied for the team-lead with six singles wins on the season.
  • At No. 3 singles, Le Meur continued his dominant ways, winning his sixth match in a row.
  • After dropping the first set, Bottino won a hard-fought second set via tiebreaker before taking set three 6-4 to come away the victory at No. 4 singles. The victory extends Bottino's win streak to six and the senior remains a perfect 6-0 at the No. 4 singles spot.
  • Competing at the No. 6 singles position for the first time in 2024, Schwebel came away with an exciting three-set victory after dropping the first set against his Duquesne opponent.

UP NEXT
  • The Flames are off until March 1 when they travel up to Milwaukee to take on Marquette.
  • The Golden Eagles are 1-6 on the season and are currently on a six-match losing streak. The program has three matches before facing the Flames. The team takes on Eastern Illinois (Feb. 18), North Dakota (Feb. 23) and Montana (Feb. 24).
  • Last season the Flames came away with a 4-1 victory over the Golden Eagles in Milwaukee. Marquette holds a 14-2 advantage in the series history.
