Three Flames Finish in Top Ten at ASU Spring Invitational

The UIC golf program placed third in the team standings at the 36-hole event

PRATTVILLE, Ala. (Feb. 19, 2024) – The UIC golf program opened its 2024 spring season with a strong showing at the ASU Spring Invitational, as three Flames placed in the top ten in the individual standings. Graduate student Dasa Urbankova (Brno, Czech Republic/Menlo College) finished the event tied for fourth after shooting +4 (75) on the final day of competition, while senior Megan Tang (Memphis, Tenn./St. Mary's) tied for seventh with a +16 (158) and senior Brooke Beyer (Mesa, Ariz./Desert Ridge) tied for ninth after shooting +17 (159).
 
The Flames finished in third place in the team standings out of a ten-team field, shooting +65 (633).

"It was great to be back out competing at our first tournament of the spring season in Alabama. We were battling throughout Monday's match for a second place finish and we had a good mindset throughout the competition, but the putts weren't dropping. We're look forward to improving heading in to the next tournament."
ASU SPRING INVITATIONAL RECAP
  • After shooting +8 (79) on the first day of competition, Urbankova shot the lowest round for the Flames at the invitational Monday to surge up the leaderboard and finish in fourth place. Urbankova has finished in the top five in the individual standings in five of the six events she's competed at this season. 
  • The tournament named the graduate student to its All-Tournament team following her fourth place finish.
  • Shooting UIC's lowest round on Day One with a score of +6 (77), Tang was able to finish tied seventh at the 36-hole tournament. She has placed in the top ten in three of the five events she's competed at this season.
  • Beyer placed in the top ten for the third time this season. She finished the ASU Spring Invitational with nearly identical scores both rounds, shooting +8 (79) on Day One and +9 (80) on Day Two. The senior hit three birdies in a row during Sunday's competition.
  • Grace Szklarek (Granger, Ind./Penn) finished tied-20th in the individual standings at +20 (162), while Chaewon Jeong (Seoul, South Korea/Laurel Springs School) finished 34th after shooting +29 (171).
NEWS AND NOTES
  • UIC has placed in the top three in the team standings in five of its six tournaments during the 2023-24 season. The program has finished in third place at three-straight events.
  • The Flames combined for 14 birdies over the 36-hole event. Szklarek led the way with four birdies for UIC during the two-day tournament.
  • All five UIC golfers finished in the top 35 of the 53-person field, with four placing in the top 20.
  • UIC shot nearly identical scores on Day One and Day Two of the event, shooting 317 Sunday and 316 Monday.
  • UIC finished five strokes behind second-place Troy and one stroke ahead of fourth-place Western Illinois.
UP NEXT
  • The UIC golf program is off until mid-March when the program heads to Oldsmar, Fla. for the Butler Don Benbow Spring Invitational.
  • The two-day event runs from March 11-12 at the East Lake Woodlands Country Club.
