SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS (Feb. 21, 2024) – The UIC baseball team (2-2, 0-0 MVC) competed in its lone mid-week game in the Lone Star State Wednesday, as it traveled to San Antonio for a showdown against Incarnate Word (4-1, 0-0 SLC). For the second consecutive game, the Flames allowed the opponent to get on the board first, and it once again cost UIC, as UIW earned a 22-7 victory in seven innings Wednesday afternoon.

SCORING SUMMARY
- After the Flames left the bases loaded in the top half of the first, the Cardinals came to bat in the home half of the first. UIW would send 15 hitters to the plate, amassing 10 runs in the opening frame, nine of which charged to starter Ryan Smith (Westchester, Ill./Nazareth Academy).
- UIC would answer back in the top of the second inning, as Zane Zielinski (Chicago, Ill./Lake View) drove a single through the left side to plate the Flames' first run of the game.

- Following a Cardinals RBI single in the bottom of the second inning, UIC continued to chip away at the deficit in the top of the third, as AJ Henkle (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) came in to score on a wild pitch to bring the score to 11-2.
- Cardinals center-fielder Cameron Caley followed up his solo home run in the first inning with another solo shot to left-center field with two outs in the bottom of the fourth, extending the UIW lead to 12-2.
- UIW would continue to build on its lead in the home half of the fifth inning, loading the bases with no outs and eventually plating ten more runs in the inning to extend its advantage to 22-2.
- The Flames got a trio of runs in the top of the sixth off the bat of Ryan Nagelbach (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield), as his first home run of the season cut the deficit to 17 before Henkle drove in a run on an RBI single to left-center field to bring the score to 22-6.

- Garrett Kay (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) notched his first collegiate RBI in the top of the sixth, as his triple down the right field line cut the gap to 22-7.

- Despite battling back in the late innings, the Cardinals would take the game in seven innings by a 22-7 final score.

The Flames will remain in Texas, as they prepare to compete in the 2024 Sugarland College Classic this weekend at Constellation Field, home of the Sugarland Space Cowboys (AAA-Houston Astros). The Flames will open the event with a Friday morning contest against Lamar, with a first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m. CT.
