Baseball Falls in Extra Innings to Lamar Friday

Flames Out-Hit Cardinals But Drop Opening Game of Sugarland Classic

SUGARLAND, TEXAS (Feb. 23, 2024) – The UIC baseball team opened competition in the 2024 Sugarland College Classic Friday morning, as the Flames took on Lamar at Constellation Field. After taking an early lead, the Flames found themselves locked in a tie game late, before eventually falling in extra innings by an 8-7 final score.

SCORING SUMMARY
  • The Flames jumped out to an early lead in Friday's game, as Rayth Petersen (Barrington, Ill./Morton College) opened the scoring with an RBI single through the left side to give UIC a 1-0 lead.
  • UIC would play add-on in the visiting half of the second inning, plating four runs, highlighted by a two-RBI single from AJ Henkle (Huntley, Ill./McHenry County College) and a Jackson Bessette (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) RBI ground-rule double.
  • Bessette would continue his hot hitting in his next plate appearance, launching a solo home run, his first of the year, to right field to give UIC a 6-1 lead.
  • Starting pitcher Dillon Schueler (Rock Falls, Ill./Sauk Valley CC) was chased after three full innings, and the Cardinals took advantage, plating four runs in the fourth inning to pull to within one run at 6-5.
  • After a James Harris (Chicago, Ill./Gwendolyn Brooks College Prep) RBI double in the top of the eighth inning, Lamar drew level in the home half of the inning, launching back-to-back home runs to bring the game to 7-7 stalemate.
  • Neither side was able to plate a run in the ninth, so the Flames went to extra innings for the first time this season. Unable to plate a run in the visiting half of the inning, UIC allowed the Cardinals to load the bases with just one out in the bottom of the tenth. After inducing a ground ball fielder's choice, the Flames surrendered the winning run on a bases-loaded walk to Kanin Dodge, and were handed an 8-7 loss in 10 innings.
