Baseball Earns First Series Sweep With Doubleheader Victory

Flames Push Winning Streak to Five Games With Sweep of St. Thomas

CHICAGO (March 10, 2024) – The UIC baseball team (10-5, 0-0 MVC) closed out its three-game series against St. Thomas (5-10, 0-0 Summit) on Sunday, as the two played a nine-inning doubleheader on a cold day at Curtis Granderson Stadium. After an exciting walk-off winner for the Flames in game one of the double-header, UIC earned the series sweep in a 2-0 pitcher's duel in the series finale.

GAME 1
  • The Flames jumped out to an early lead in the opening game of Sunday's double-header, as Zane Zielinski (Chicago, Ill./Lake View) added to his team-leading RBI total (16) with a first inning sacrifice fly, giving UIC the 1-0 lead.
  • After several scoreless innings on both sides, St. Thomas would manage to scrape across four runs in the top half of the sixth inning off Flames starter Brandon Bak (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North), giving the Tommies a 4-1 lead. Bak was outstanding for the Flames on Sunday, pitching eight complete innings, striking out eight and not walking a single batter.
  • UIC plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to draw within one, as RBI singles from Carson Roberts (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton North) and Zielinski brought the Flames within striking distance late in the game.
  • Needing one run in the bottom of the ninth, Jackson Bessette would come around to score the tying run from second on a Rayth Petersen (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) single to send the first game of the double-header to extra innings.
  • Following a scoreless tenth inning for both sides, the Flames came to bat in the bottom of the 11th inning looking for a walk-off victory. After a leadoff triple from Bessette, Kendall Ewell (Calumet City, Ill./Kentucky) singled through the left side of the infield to bring home the winning run, giving UIC a 5-4 victory in 11 innings.

GAME 2
  • The second game of Sunday's double-header shaped up as a pitcher's duel throughout most of the game, as the two sides traded zeroes on the scoreboard for the first six innings of play.
  • Game two starter Kendall Lyons (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) gave the Flames another solid outing, going six complete innings and not allowing a St. Thomas run.
  • The Flames finally broke through on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the seventh inning, as Bessette drove home the game's first run with an RBI single into left center. UIC added another run as Zielinski scored on a designed pick-off play with runners on first and third, running the UIC lead to 2-0, the game's final score. With the win, the Flames extend their win streak to five games, their longest so far this season.
