NASHVILLE (March 10, 2024) – The UIC softball team battled hard on the diamond Sunday afternoon at Belmont but dropped a nonconference doubleheader (2-0 and 1-0) to conclude the Music City Classic at E.S. Rose Park in Nashville.
The Flames collected back-to-back complete games from their starting pitching. In game one, graduate student
Christina Toniolo (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) pitched six innings, allowing six hits and striking out one. Redshirt junior
Alyssa McIntosh (Lancaster, Calif./Lancaster) pitched 6.2 innings in game two, scattering 12 hits and holding the Bruins scoreless until the bottom of the seventh.
Freshman
Cameran Rios (Effingham, Ill./St Anthony) collected the third multi-hit game of her collegiate career, going 2-for-3 in the first game.
COMMENT FROM HEAD COACH LYNN CURYLO
"Each game was a pitcher's duel. Alyssa and Christina were solid in the circle. Our defense was fantastic behind them. Unfortunately, our bats were cold. We are ready to open with Murray State in Missouri Valley Conference play next weekend!"
GAME ONE (2-0, BEL)
- Graduate student Carlee Jo Clark (Carol Stream, Ill./Southern Illinois) took a 1-1 pitch out to right field for a base hit in the top first but was left stranded.
- Senior Larisa Villa (La Habra, Calif./La Habra) poked the ball passed the middle infielders in the top of the second but three consecutive strikeouts ended the inning for the Flames.
- After allowing a run in the first inning, Toniolo settled into the circle. Flanked by strong defensive play, Toniolo held the Bruins to just three more hits in the second and third innings.
- The Flames gained another base runner in the top of the fourth when freshman Siena Stickney (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capo Valley) walked but a fly out from junior Hailey Cowing (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance) ending the inning.
- After the Bruins added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning, Toniolo posted back-to-back 1-2-3 innings for the Flames, not allowing another hit for the rest of the game.
- After graduate student Alannah Cran (Oxnard, Calif.) walked with two outs in the bottom of seventh, she was moved into scoring position behind Rios' second single of the game. The Bruins secured the win in the next at bat with a swinging strikeout to end the game.
GAME TWO (1-0, BEL)
- After a scoreless first two innings, the Flames earned their first base runner in the third when junior JoJo Santiago (Channahon, Ill./ Joliet Catholic Academy) smacked a ground ball past the middle infield for a single before being left on base.
- Junior Grace Fleming (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan sparkled on defense in the next half inning when she threw out Belmont's Brenna Blume at third trying to stretch a double into a triple.
- Senior Anna Walker (Burnside, Ill./Warsaw) led off the top of the fourth with a single and later moved to second on a ground out from Clark but was left on base.
- Through the work of the defense behind her, McIntosh continued to keep Belmont at bay. After the bases were loaded with no outs in the bottom of the fifth, McIntosh forced Belmont's Grace Gressly to hit a comebacker to start a double play, followed by Blume grounding out to Stickney for the final out of the inning.
- Belmont secured the win in the bottom of the seventh after Gressly tripled to open the bottom of the seventh, and a pinch-running Ella Bertucci scored on a single by Blume.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
- Ranking second nationally in double plays per game (0.70), the Flames turned three double plays against the Bruins, two in the first game and one in the second game. They lead the entire Missouri Valley Conference with 16 double plays this season.
- Rios two-hit performance in game one now has her fifth on the team in hits (12) and batting average (.226).
