Softball Sets Sights on Midweek Matchup at Northwestern

Flames aim for first Power Five victory since 2020

EVANSTON, Ill. (March 19, 2024)—The UIC softball team (8-19) will play its 28th consecutive road game Wednesday when it travels to fellow Chicagoland school Northwestern (11-7) for a 3 p.m. (CT) first pitch at Sharon J. Drysdale Field in Evanston, Ill. The game will be streamed live on a subscription basis through B1G+ (bigtenplus.com), while live stats will be available at UICFlames.com.

SCOUTING NORTHWESTERN
  • This will be the 45th clash on the diamond between UIC and Northwestern, with the Wildcats edging out the Flames last season by a 6-3 score. Graduate student Carlee Jo Clark (Carol Stream, Ill./St. Francis/Southern Illinois) and junior Hailey Cowing (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance) each collected home runs in the game.
  • UIC has 10 wins all-time against Northwestern, with the Flames' most recent victory over the Wildcats coming on April 20, 2005 (a 4-3 win at Flames Field).
  • UIC is aiming for its first win over a Power Five conference opponent since Feb. 28, 2020, when the Flames defeated Louisville, 10-2 in five innings at the Oklahoma State/Tulsa Invitational
  • After a 2023 season that led to an NCAA Super Regional appearance, the Wildcats have gone 11-7 this spring. They are on a three-game winning streak, having beat Minnesota, No. 24 Boston and No. 23 South Carolina at the Garnet & Black Invitational in Columbia, S.C. last weekend.
  • Northwestern leads the Big Ten Conference with a 1.99 team ERA, having allowed only 36 runs in 126.2 innings of work.
  • Sophomore Kansas Robinson has broken out as the Wildcats' biggest threat in the batter's box. She has the seventh-highest batting average in the Big Ten (.422) with 27 hits and 18 RBI this season.
 
LAST TIME OUT: MURRAY STATE
  • The Flames opened Missouri Valley Conference play on the road last weekend, going 1-2 at Murray State.
  • Graduate student Christina Toniolo (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) pitched two complete games, striking out 12 batters and holding the Racers to a .220 batting average.
  • Graduate student Alannah Cran (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard) batted .625 (5-for-8) in the series with two doubles and three singles in the three games.
  • Freshman Cameran Rios (Effingham, Ill./St Anthony) tallied three hits in the final two games of the series, going 2-for-3 on Sunday for her third multi-hit game of the season.
  • Clark crushed her team-leading fourth home run against the Racers, and ranks 10th in the MVC with 10 RBI this year.
