Softball Falls to Seton Hall in Back-to-Back Late Inning Battles

The Flames Conclude FIU Classic Against North Dakota at 8 a.m. (CT) Sunday

MIAMI (March, 2, 2024) – The UIC softball team (5-14) fell short to Seton Hall in consecutive games Saturday afternoon, as the Flames fell to the Pirates 6-5 and 8-6, in the second day of the FIU Classic.

Junior Hailey Cowing (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance) tallied three hits in both games, while collecting three RBI.  Junior Grace Fleming (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) and graduate student Carlee Jo Clark (Carol Stream, Ill./Southern Illinois) each crushed home runs in the first game for the Flames.

QUOTE FROM HEAD COACH LYNN CURYLO
"Our players went out and battled from start to finish today. Unfortunately, today just wasn't our day."

GAME ONE (6-5, SHU)
  • The Flames struck first in the top of the first inning when junior Grace Fleming (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) walked to begin the frame and scored on a passed ball. Later in the inning the Flames extended their lead to 2-0 after Cowing hit an RBI single, scoring senior Anna Walker (Burnside, Ill./Warsaw).
  • Redshirt junior Alyssa McIntosh (Lancaster, Calif./Lancaster) opened in the circle for UIC, pitching a 1-2-3 first inning, which ended with a swinging strikeout.
  • After the Pirates took a 6-2 lead in the middle innings, senior Miranda Gomez (Pico Rivera, Calif./Bishop Amat) came in relief for the Flames. The senior allowed three hits, striking out one and walking a batter in her final three innings of work.
  • In the top of the sixth, Clark crushed a pitch to dead center, clearing the fence for her second home run of the season. The solo shut cut the Pirates' lead to three.
  • In the seventh, Fleming hit a line drive over the left field wall for a two-run homerun, scoring freshman Cameran Rios (Effingham, Ill./St. Anthony). However, the UIC comeback fell short as Seton Hall held on for the 6-5 victory.
GAME TWO (8-5, SHU)
  • In the top of the first, after a Fleming single, a Walker Bunt and a walk from Clark, the Flames found themselves with the bases loaded with no outs. Senior Emma Crowley (Peoria, Ill./Peoria Notre Dame) crushed a ball to the left-center gap, scoring Fleming and Walker to give UIC the early 2-0 lead.
  • After Seton Hall tacked on a run early in the bottom of the first, graduate student pitcher Christina Toniolo thwarted the Pirates' momentum, forcing a bases loaded pop out to end the inning.
  • On the first pitch in the top of the second inning, senior Larisa Villa (La Habra, Calif./La Habra) crushed a ball into the gap for a stand-up double. She later scored on a bases-loaded walk. The Flames extended their lead to 5-1 after a Cowing single scored Walker and Santiago.
  • After a quiet few innings for both teams, the Pirates scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 5-5.
  • Clark led off the top of the seventh inning with a single, followed by a walk from Crowley, but both runners were left stranded. Seton Hall secured the win in the bottom half of the inning with a walk-off home run.
 BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • Fleming's two-run home run was her first home run since April 22, 2022 against Detroit Mercy.
  • Clark is tied for sixth amongst Missouri Valley Conference hitters with two home runs on the season.
  • With five doubles in 2024, Villa has the same number of doubles as in the past three years combined.
  • After struggling to get a hit in UIC's previous tournaments, Cowing has four hits in the three games she's played at the FIU Classic.
