Baseball Uses Long-Ball to Power Past Belmont Sunday

Flames Crush Two Home Runs, Earn Series Win to Open MVC Play

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (March 24, 2024) – The UIC baseball team (15-7, 2-1 MVC) closed its three-game series against Belmont (12-12, 1-2 MVC) Sunday afternoon, as the two sides met for a 1 p.m. first pitch. Just as they have done for the first two games of the series, the Flames got out to an early lead, and were able to add on late and hang on for a 7-4 victory. The series victory is the fifth straight weekend series the Flames have won this season.

COACH'S COMMENTS

GAME SUMMARY
  • After scoring a run in the top of the first inning on an RBI groundout from Ryan Nagelbach (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield), AJ Henkle (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) increased the Flames lead with his fourth home run of the season, a two-run no-doubt home run off the scoreboard in left center field to give UIC a 3-0 lead.
  • The Bruins crawled back to a 3-2 deficit with one run in the third and one in the fourth, but James Harris (Chicago, Ill./Gwendolyn Brooks) re-established a two-run advantage with an RBI single in the top of the sixth inning.
  • After the Bruins tallied a run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh, UIC answered back with three runs in the top of the eighth, highlighted by a solo home run from Rayth Petersen (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) and an RBI single by Zane Zielinski (Chicago, Ill./Lake View).
  • Kendall Lyons (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) earned his second win of the season Sunday, pitching six innings, and surrendering just two earned runs. Reece Lawler (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) closed the door for the Flames in the ninth in a non-save situation, as UIC earned the series victory on get-away day with a 7-4 triumph.
