Men’s Tennis Defeats Buffalo 4-3 in Conference Clash

The victory is UIC’s first conference win as affiliate members of the Mid-American Conference

CHICAGO (March 24, 2024) –The UIC men's tennis program (9-7, 1-4 MAC) won its first conference match as affiliate members of the Mid-American Conference, as the Flames took down Buffalo (4-10, 0-5 MAC) in a thrilling 4-3 match Sunday afternoon at the XS Tennis Village.
 
The Flames won the doubles point along with victories at the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 singles positions in Sunday's match. Senior Aleksa Bucan (Belgrade, Serbia/Arkansas) clinched the match victory for the Flames with his two-set win at No. 2 singles.

"I'm so happy for the guys today. We came close on Friday and we knew today's match was going to be a real challenge for us. We brought the intensity and competitive energy again on the court and today's match went our way."
 
MATCH RECAP
  • The Flames came out strong in doubles competition, with UIC's No. 1 team of Randy Wilson (Miami, Fla./Florida Gulf Coach) and Mihailo Savic (Smederevska Palanka, Serbia Sportska Gimnazija) and the No. 3 pair of Bucan and Robinson Le Meur (Evreux, France/Sciences Po Bordeaux) both winning 6-3 over their Buffalo opponents. With the win, Bucan and Le Meur move to 10-1 on the season and are 10-0 at the No. 3 doubles spot.
  • At No. 1 singles Wilson won 6-3, 6-3 to win his second match in a row. The senior has eight singles wins on the season.
  • At No. 3 singles, Le Meur made quick work of his opponent, winning 6-2, 6-1 for his tenth singles victory of the season.
  • After Buffalo tied the team score at 3-3 with victories at No. 4 and 5 singles, Bucan won an exhilarating match at No. 2 singles in straight sets to clinch UIC's first conference victory of the season.
  • All six of Sunday's singles matches were decided in straight sets.

UP NEXT
  • The Flames are off until Saturday when they travel to DeKalb, Ill. to face MAC foe Northern Illinois.
  • The Huskies swept the Flames in their first match of the season on March 16 at the Flames Outdoor Tennis Courts.
  • NIU is 15-3 on the season and 4-1 in conference play. The program is undefeated at home.
  • Saturday's contest will start at 1 p.m. at the Nelson Tennis Center at Chick Evans Field House.
