Softball Drops Sunday Doubleheader to Southern Illinois

Flames return to the road next weekend to take on Evansville March 29-31.

CHICAGO (March 24, 2024) – The UIC softball team (8-23, 1-5 MVC) clashed on the diamond in a Missouri Valley Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon against Southern Illinois (23-4, 8-0 MVC) at Flames Field, falling in both games, 6-4 and 9-1.

Senior Larisa Villa (La Habra, Calif./La Habra) scattered three hits in the two games. Graduate student Alannah Cran (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard) and senior Emma Crowley (Peoria, Ill./Peoria Notre Dame) each collected a pair of hits. Junior Grace Fleming (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) crushed her second home run of the year in game two of the doubleheader.  Graduate students Christina Toniolo (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) and Carlee Jo Clark (Carol Stream, Ill./St. Francis/Southern Illinois) combined for 11 strikeouts in 12.1 innings of work.

GAME ONE
  • A two-run home run from the Salukis had them out to an early lead before the Flames scored three runs in the bottom of the inning. Clark, Cran and Crowley scored off a defensive error and a pair of fielder choices after getting on base earlier in the inning.
  • Once Southern Illinois tied it 3-3 in the top of the second, Toniolo began to settle in. She collected three of her six strikeouts in her next two innings of work.
  • After Southern Illinois added three insurance runs in the top of the fourth, a two-out base hit off the bat of junior Emma Gumont (Warren, Ohio/Champion/Notre Dame College) gave the Flames their first base runner in over two innings. She was later scored on a double from junior Jojo Santiago (Channahon, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) to cut the Salukis lead to two.
  • After a 1-2-3 inning on defense in the top of the fifth, Villa hit a line drive out to the right field grass for her first base hit game before a base hit from Crowley moved her to third. A sacrifice bunt moved Crowley to scoring position , before both baserunners were left stranded
  • Toniolo tallied her sixth and final strikeout amidst a short top of the seventh, as the Flames held the Salukis to their third consecutive scoreless inning.
  • Cran and Crowley each collected their second base hit of the game in the bottom of the seventh before they were left on base at the end of the inning, securing the win for Southern Illinois.
GAME TWO
  • Clark opened the game in the circle with two innings of shutout pitching,  ending the second inning with a swinging strikeout against SIU's Amanda Knutson.
  • Facing a 1-1 pitch in the bottom of the second, Fleming crushed a ball to dead center to give UIC an early 1-0 lead.
  • The Salukis regained the lead after scoring three runs entering the bottom of the fourth. The Flames opened the inning with a walk from Gumont, followed by a walk from freshman Cameran Rios (Effingham, Illinois/St. Anthony) led to runners at second and first with no outs before a fielders choice was followed by an inning-ending double play to end UIC's momentum.
  • Villa hit her second single of the game out to left field in the bottom of the of the fifth, moving Clark to scoring position before the pair was left on base.
  • UIC was plagued by five defensive errors in the later innings, sealing the win for Southern Illinois behind six additional insurance runs.

  • Fleming is now second on the team in home runs with two.
