Baseball Pulls Away Late in Mid-Week Victory Over Milwaukee

Five Flames Tally Multiple Hits in Balanced Offensive Victory

CHICAGO (March 5, 2024) – The UIC baseball team (7-5, 0-0 MVC) opened its longest home-stand of the season Tuesday, as the Flames hosted Milwaukee (0-10, 0-0 Horizon) for the first of three meetings between the two sides this season. On a cold evening in downtown Chicago, the Panthers kept it close throughout, but the Flames pulled away late to earn a 10-7 victory.

COACH'S COMMENTS

SCORING SUMMARY
  • After the Panthers plated a run in the visiting half of the first inning, the Flames wasted no time returning fire, as James Harris (Chicago, Ill./Gwendolyn Brooks) opened the scoring for UIC, sending his second triple of the season to the left-center field gap, driving home two runs to give the Flames a 2-1 lead.
  • Zane Zielinski (Chicago, Ill./Lake View) drove home his team-leading 13th run of the season with a double down the left field line later in the second inning, and would come around to score after stealing third and advancing on an error by Panthers catcher Teige Lethert, giving the Flames a 4-1 lead.
  • Harris knocked in his third run of the game in his next plate appearance in the home half of the fourth inning, and AJ Henkle (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) added an RBI double to extend the UIC advantage to 6-1.
  • The Panthers would plate a trio of runs in the visiting half of the fifth inning, but UIC answered back two innings later as Zielinski added to his team-leading RBI total with an infield single, plating pinch runner Vidal Colon (Grafton, Wis./University School of Milwaukee) to give the Flames a 7-4 advantage.
  • UIC scored three times in the bottom of the eighth to pull away, earning a 10-7 victory on a chilly Tuesday night.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • In his first start and first appearance on the mound this season, Zak Gould (Channahon, Ill./Joliet Catholic) pitched two solid innings to set the tone for the Flames, going two innings in an abbreviated start, surrendering just one Panthers hit and one earned run.
  • The Flames had five hitters with multiple hits in Tuesday night's game, just the second time UIC has accomplished that feat this season, with the last being a 13-6 win over Kansas on Feb. 17.
UP NEXT
